Product Description

Becky the bumblebee just loves it when spring comes, she works hard visiting beautiful flowers all day and filling her little pollen sacs – then home to the hive in time for tea. She loves her job! She is 9 inches tall (when made with recommended materials).

The pattern uses US terminology (UK terminology is also available as a separate listing) and can be downloaded after purchase. It is clear to follow with detailed instructions and lots of pictures for step by step making and assembly. There are also picture instructions for colour change. I have made Becky using Scheepjes Stone Washed XL (Aran/worsted weight yarn) - details in pattern.

The following stitches/techniques are used in this pattern: slip stitch, magic ring, single crochet, double crochet, increase, decrease (sc2tog), colour change

Becky the Bumblebee Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

Project Overview

Becky the Bumblebee is an intermediate-level amigurumi crochet toy designed by Little Green Bear. This charming stuffed bumblebee character stands 9 inches tall including antennae when made with the recommended materials. The pattern captures the personality of a busy bee who loves visiting flowers during spring to collect pollen and return home to the hive. The finished toy features a delightful stinger detail that adds character to this whimsical handmade creation.

Craft and Technique

This project uses the crochet technique with US terminology throughout the pattern. Amigurumi is a Japanese crochet method that creates small, stuffed three-dimensional toys and decorative objects. The technique involves working in continuous rounds to build spherical and cylindrical shapes that are then stuffed and assembled into a finished character. This pattern is classified as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic stitches.

Materials Required

The pattern calls for aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight), which provides good stitch definition and structure for the finished toy. The specific yarn used in the original design is Scheepjes Stone Washed XL, selected for its durability and color quality:

  • Yellow: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL – Beryl (873), 50g
  • Black: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL – Black Onyx (843), 50g
  • White: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL – Moon Stone (841), 50g
  • Light Grey: Scheepjes Stone Washed XL – Crystal Quartz (854), 50g

Additional supplies include a 4mm (size G) crochet hook for the main body and a 4.5mm hook for the wings, allowing for subtle texture variation between components. The pattern also requires plastic safety eyes (18mm size), polyester filling for stuffing, a tapestry needle for seaming, a stitch marker for tracking rounds, and a row counter to maintain pattern accuracy.

Stitches and Construction

While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern documentation, amigurumi construction typically employs fundamental crochet stitches including single crochet, which creates tight, dense fabric ideal for stuffed toys. The pattern uses continuous rounds worked in a spiral, a hallmark of amigurumi technique that eliminates visible seams between rounds. The use of two different hook sizes—4mm for the body and 4.5mm for the wings—demonstrates how hook selection influences fabric drape and texture, with the slightly larger hook creating more open, delicate wings that contrast with the firm body structure.
