Product Description
So I have a pair of socks that I love and they have a bear on them. I really love them. So I used them as inspiration to create more “story” for the bear. I imagine he is waiting for a fish to pop by in the river so he can have a yummy dinner. When in Vermont, I see lots of wildlife. A moose even showed up on our front lawn on the morning of my son’s marriage at the top of Okemo in this pandemic year. We took it as a happy sign for their life ahead. But I have never seen a bear…. maybe this will get one to make a visit ( while we are inside ! )
Bear in the Woods Cowl by Idle Hands Knits
Project Overview
The Bear in the Woods Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting design that tells a charming story through colorwork. Inspired by a beloved pair of socks featuring a bear, this cowl depicts a bear waiting by a river for fish, bringing woodland imagery and narrative depth to a wearable accessory. The design reflects the designer's appreciation for Vermont wildlife and creates a cozy, conversation-starting piece perfect for those who love nature-inspired knitwear.
What You'll Create
This project produces a tighter cowl—a circular neckwear piece that can be worn as a single loop or doubled for extra warmth. The cowl features colorwork elements including a bear motif and water ripples, creating visual interest and storytelling through the knitted fabric. The design is available in multiple sizes, with modifications made to each size to ensure the best visual presentation of the pattern elements.
Knitting Techniques
- Colorwork: The primary technique involves working with multiple colors to create the bear and water elements, requiring attention to color changes and pattern placement
- Water ripple motifs: Modified ripple patterns have been refined for better visual synchronization throughout the design
- Circular construction: The cowl is worked in the round, creating a seamless tubular garment
- Gauge customization: The pattern accommodates gauge flexibility—increasing needle sizes allows knitters to work a smaller size while achieving a larger finished cowl
Stitches Used
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern notes provided, the Bear in the Woods Cowl employs standard knitting stitches combined with colorwork techniques to render the bear and water imagery. The pattern includes modifications to ripple stitch elements to enhance their visual impact and alignment across the design.
Materials and Yarn Weight
This cowl is designed for worsted weight yarn, making it an accessible project for intermediate knitters. The pattern notes reference specific yarn choices used in the photography: Malabrigo Rios in Coco Brown paired with Cascade 220 Sup, creating a rich color combination that brings the woodland scene to life. Knitters will need appropriate needles for worsted weight yarn in the round, typically circular needles or double-pointed needles depending on preferred construction method.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Bear in the Woods Cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork. The pattern's flexibility regarding gauge and size options makes it approachable while still offering the satisfying challenge of executing a detailed pictorial design.
