Product Description

The Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible is my new favorite knitting book. You might recognize this stitch pattern from the cover of the book. I decided to use just the one, fairly simple stitch pattern and arrange it in columns for a ribbed sock with a ‘twist’ (pun intended!). These socks are worked from the cuff down with a traditional heel-flap heel. The columns of twisted stitches flow down the heel, and the stitch pattern continues down the instep of the foot.

Directions for three cuff lengths are provided.

Bavarian Columns Socks by Heather Storta

What is Being Made

Bavarian Columns Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern for cuff-down socks featuring a distinctive columnar stitch arrangement. The design offers three size options—Short, Medium, and Tall—to accommodate different leg lengths while maintaining a consistent foot circumference of 7.25 inches. The finished socks are designed to fit an 8-inch foot circumference, with cuff heights of 4.5 inches (Short), 5.75 inches (Medium), or 7 inches (Tall), making them versatile for various preferences and fit requirements.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting pattern employs several traditional sock construction techniques. The socks are worked from the cuff down using a classic heel-flap heel method, a time-tested approach that provides durability and a comfortable fit. The stitch pattern is strategically arranged in vertical columns that flow continuously from the cuff down through the heel flap and across the instep of the foot, creating visual interest and structural definition. The designer notes that the shorter cuff fits snugly, requiring knitters to carefully review fit notes or select the appropriate size before beginning.

Stitches Used

The pattern features a twisted stitch pattern inspired by The Japanese Knitting Stitch Bible, which appears on the cover of that reference book. Rather than incorporating multiple complex stitches, the designer chose to use a single, fairly simple stitch pattern and arrange it strategically in columns to create a ribbed sock with distinctive visual character. This columnar arrangement of the twisted stitches gives the socks their name and signature aesthetic while remaining accessible to intermediate knitters.

Materials

  • Yarn: Copper Corgi Savannah Sock in Spanish Moss colorway; 460 yards (421 meters) per 115-gram (4-ounce) skein; 100% Superwash Merino Wool; one skein required
  • Needles: Size 0 (2.00mm) needles in a set of 5 double-pointed needles (or alternative circular needle options)
  • Yarn Weight: 4-ply sock yarn, ideal for creating fine, detailed stitch definition in the twisted column pattern

Pattern Overview

Bavarian Columns Socks represents an intermediate knitting project that combines traditional sock construction with a visually striking stitch pattern. The use of Superwash Merino Wool ensures the finished socks are both durable and easy to care for, making them practical for everyday wear. The columnar arrangement of twisted stitches creates a sophisticated ribbed effect with a subtle "twist," as the designer playfully notes, adding depth and texture to what might otherwise be a straightforward sock design.
