Basic Ribbed Toe-Up Sock Recipe for Worsted Weight by Keya Kuhn

What is Being Made

This pattern creates a pair of socks using the efficient two-at-a-time toe-up construction method. The Basic Ribbed Toe-Up Sock Recipe for Worsted Weight is designed by Keya Kuhn as an intermediate-level knitting project suitable for crafters looking to expand their sock-knitting skills. The pattern accommodates multiple sizing options, ranging from Small (7-8" circumference) through Extra-Large (10-11" circumference), making it adaptable for various foot sizes.

Techniques Used

This sock pattern employs the two-at-a-time toe-up method, a technique that allows knitters to create both socks simultaneously on a single pair of circular needles. This approach minimizes the common problem of second-sock syndrome and ensures both socks are identical in size and length. The pattern provides instructions using the Magic Loop technique, a popular method for working small circumference projects on longer circular needles. Knitters begin at the toe and work upward toward the cuff, giving them greater control over final sock length and the ability to adjust yardage as needed.

Stitches and Construction

The sock features ribbed detailing that provides stretch and a classic finished appearance. The main fabric is worked in stocking stitch, which creates the smooth, traditional stockinette texture characteristic of well-fitted socks. The pattern uses a gauge of 7 stitches by 9 rows per 1 inch in stocking stitch, which is standard for worsted weight yarn and helps ensure proper fit and durability.

Materials and Yarn Requirements

This pattern is specifically designed for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that produces durable, warm socks with good stitch definition. The pattern recommends specific yardage: at least 210 yards per 100 grams for the main color and at least 55 yards for the contrast color. The designer's sample uses Malabrigo Rios in Deep Sea Dash for the main color and Knit Picks WOTA in Calypso Heather for contrast, though any worsted weight yarn of comparable weight can be substituted.

Needles and Notions

The pattern requires US 2 (2.75mm) circular needles with a recommended length of 47 inches (119 cm), which is the standard length for Magic Loop sock knitting. Additional notions include 1 locking marker to track pattern repeats, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn for holding stitches during construction. These materials are essential for executing the two-at-a-time technique smoothly and managing the multiple active stitches required for simultaneous sock construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have foundational skills including cast-on methods, basic stitch work, and familiarity with circular needle techniques. The two-at-a-time toe-up method adds complexity beyond basic sock patterns, making it ideal for knitters ready to refine their sock construction skills and learn efficient production techniques.
