Product Description
The sweater is knitted from top down seamlessly. You will start with the back in two parts that you will join to knit until the armholes. Then you will put the back stitches to knit the front to the armholes, finally you will join to knit the back and front together in round to end. The sleeves will be knitted in round, at the end, by picking up stitches around the armhole.
Barak Sweater by Marion Crivelli
What Is Being Made
The Barak sweater is a knitted pullover garment designed by Marion Crivelli in collaboration with Arcoiris Yarn. This intermediate-level knitting project is available in seven sizes ranging from XS to XXXL, making it accessible to a wide range of body types. The sweater features a fitted yoke construction with finished bust circumferences spanning from 41 inches (104.5 cm) in the smallest size to 54 inches (137 cm) in the largest size, with 10 to 15 cm of positive ease incorporated into the design for comfortable wear.
Construction and Techniques
The Barak sweater employs a yoke-based construction method, a popular technique in modern knitwear design that creates a seamless garment worked from the top down. The yoke depth varies by size from 4¾ inches (12 cm) in the XS size to 8¼ inches (21 cm) in the XXXL size, allowing for proper proportional shaping across the size range. The upper sleeve circumference measurements range from 10½ inches (26.75 cm) to 17¼ inches (43.5 cm), providing tailored sleeve fit for each size.
This design utilizes several advanced knitting techniques that justify its intermediate difficulty rating. The construction involves working in the round, which is indicated by the use of double-pointed needles (dpns) and beginning-of-round (BOR) markers referenced throughout the pattern instructions.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
The Barak sweater incorporates a variety of essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit stitch (k): The foundational stitch used throughout the garment
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Knit two together through the back loop (k2togtbl): A left-leaning decrease that creates a different visual effect
- Make one left (m1l): An increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the front and knitting into the back of the loop
- Make one left purl (m1lp): A purl-based increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the front and purling into the back of the loop
- Make one right (m1r): An increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the back and knitting into the front of the loop
- Make one right purl (m1rp): A purl-based increase worked by lifting the loop between stitches from the back and purling into the front of the loop
The pattern also utilizes cable markers (mC) and regular markers (m) to help track pattern repeats and construction points throughout the knitting process. The combination of directional decreases (k2tog and k2togtbl) and paired increases (m1l, m1r, and their purl variations) suggests the sweater features shaping details that require careful stitch manipulation.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Barak sweater is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, which is a lightweight to medium-weight yarn that produces a fabric with good definition and drape. This yarn weight is ideal for creating garments with clear stitch definition, making it particularly suitable for displaying the shaping techniques and stitch patterns incorporated into this design. The pattern calls for double-pointed needles for working in the round and cable markers for tracking pattern sections, which are standard tools for yoke-based sweater construction.
