Product Description
Ballan is a colour work hat based on a sunflower that I was lucky to encounter in my travels last summer.
Worked from the crown to the band, the hat begins with a textured centre to mimic the sunflowers centre, the petals are worked in stranded colourwork and the body of the hat is worked in stocking stitch.
The band features simple cables that mimic the plant the flower grows on.
This is a pattern with a number of techniques but each are worked separately.

Ballan Sunflower Hat by Tracey Lee
What is Being Made
The Ballan is a seamless knit hat featuring colorwork design inspired by a sunflower. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a versatile design that can be customized as either a fitted or slouchy style hat, making it suitable for various preferences and head shapes. The hat is worked in the round from the crown down to the band, creating a continuous piece without seams.
Available Sizes
The Ballan hat pattern includes five size options with the following approximate finished circumferences:
- XS: 35cm / 14 inches
- S: 41cm / 16 inches
- M: 48cm / 19 inches
- L: 55cm / 22 inches
- XL: 63cm / 25 inches
The hat length as written is approximately 15–30cm (6–12 inches), allowing for adjustment based on personal preference and slouch level.
Knitting Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques. The hat is constructed using seamless in-the-round knitting, which requires working with circular needles or double-pointed needles. Colorwork is central to the design, with the sunflower pattern created using multiple colors worked together. The pattern utilizes cable stitches (C2L abbreviation indicates a cable cross worked by slipping stitches to a cable needle). Increases are worked strategically on the crown section using the backwards loop method (M1), with increases worked in both color sections to maintain the integrity of the colorwork design. A stitch marker is used at the beginning of round and slipped every round to track the start of each circular row.
Stitches Used
The Ballan hat pattern incorporates the following fundamental stitches:
- Knit (K): The primary stitch forming the fabric base
- Purl (P): Used to add texture and definition to the design
- Cable 2 Left (C2L): A cable cross stitch created by slipping 2 stitches to a cable needle, holding at the front of work, knitting 2 stitches, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle
- Make 1 (M1): An increase stitch worked using the backwards loop method to add stitches on the crown
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Ballan hat is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that provides good stitch definition for colorwork projects. The pattern requires multiple colors of yarn—designated as Colour A (CA), Colour B (CB), and Colour C (CC) in the pattern abbreviations. For the most effective sunflower representation, the designer recommends choosing colors with good contrast to ensure the colorwork design is visually striking and clearly displays the sunflower motif. Circular needles or double-pointed needles appropriate for DK weight yarn are required for working this seamless, in-the-round construction.
Pattern Structure
The pattern is chart-based, with all sizes using the same colorwork chart. The number of times the chart repeats varies by size to accommodate the different circumferences. This approach allows knitters to follow a single visual guide while adjusting the overall dimensions of the finished hat through the number of repeats worked.
