What you'll need

Product Description

This pattern was inspired by the richly colored Terra Cotta pots that soak up sun on our porch during the warmer months. One skein of Quince makes a pair of mitts that are quick and springy. The eyelets let hands breathe while the stitch pattern protects from cooler, windy days.

The sample is shown in Quince & Co. Finch. A suggested substitute is shown below.

Baked Clay Mittens by Alicia Plummer

What is Being Made

Baked Clay is an intermediate-level knitted mitten pattern designed by Alicia Plummer. The mittens are available in two sizes: 7 inches (18 cm) and 9 inches (23 cm) in circumference, with a total height of 8 inches (20 cm). These mittens are characterized by their exceptional stretch and feature decorative eyelets that bloom when blocked, creating an elegant finished appearance.

Knitting Techniques

The mittens are constructed using a bottom-up method, which allows knitters to try on the garment as they progress. The pattern employs a thumb gusset construction technique where thumb stitches are initially placed on holders while the main mitt body is completed. Once the body is finished, the thumb stitches are picked up and worked separately to complete the mitten. This modular approach simplifies the construction process and allows for better fit customization.

The pattern includes eyelet details that are intentionally blocked to bloom, creating decorative texture. Knitters have the option to knit into the back of yarn overs to slightly close the eyelets if preferred, offering flexibility in the final aesthetic.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which forms the foundation of the mittens. The pattern incorporates yarn overs to create the eyelet details that characterize the design. The gauge is worked at 24 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch.

Materials Required

Yarn: The pattern calls for approximately 175 yards (160 meters) for the smaller size and 200 yards (183 meters) for the larger size. The sample shown uses Quince & Co. Finch, which provides 221 yards (202 meters) per 50 grams (1.53 ounces).

Needles and Notions: US 4 (3.5 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles are used for the main construction. Additional supplies include one place marker for tracking pattern repeats and a darning needle for weaving in ends upon completion.
