Product Description
Baju Bakau is an elegant pullover (or tunic) finished with slightly flaring lacy bottom and cuffs, the same lovely lace motif as in the shawls, Bakau and Serangoon. The fit is tailored yet relaxed.
You’ll knit with Åsa Tricosa's seamless topdown Ziggurat method (see overview on the asatricosa webpage
The name is a fond nod to Singapore where Baju Bakau was thought up (as were the Bakau and Serangoon shawls). Baju is Malay for long-sleeved shirt, Bakau is a mangrove – the lace arches are a little like arching mangrove roots.

Baju Bakau: Elegant Top-Down Seamless Lacy Pullover
What is Being Made
Baju Bakau is an elegant pullover or tunic designed by Åsa Tricosa, featuring a tailored yet relaxed fit. The garment showcases a sophisticated construction with slightly flaring lacy details at the bottom and cuffs, creating a refined silhouette suitable for intermediate knitters seeking a seamless, polished finished piece.
Construction Method and Techniques
This pullover is knitted entirely in one piece using a top-down construction method, eliminating the need for seaming. The design features set-in, top-down sleeves that are integrated seamlessly into the body during the knitting process. A narrow, knitted-on lacy collar finishes the neckline. The combination of these techniques results in a completely seamless garment with refined shaping and elegant lacy details.
Stitches and Stitch Work
Baju Bakau incorporates lacy stitch patterns throughout the design, particularly featured at the cuffs and the flaring bottom section. The lacy elements add visual interest and create an elegant, sophisticated aesthetic while maintaining the garment's structural integrity through careful stitch placement and decreasing techniques.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Fyberspates Faery Wings, a luxurious 4-ply yarn composed of silk, mohair, and nylon blend, offering 350 meters (380 yards) per 100 grams. Yardage requirements range from 840 to 1,280 meters (910 to 1,390 yards) depending on size. Alternative yarn suggestions include Dibadu Curly Silk, Solstice Yarn Changeling, and Sparkleduck Tempest, all suitable for achieving similar drape and lacy effects.
Needles and Notions
- 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needle, 60–100 cm (24–40 inches)
- 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 80–100 cm (32–40 inches)
- Stitch holder(s)
- Stitch markers
Sizing and Gauge
Baju Bakau is available in ten sizes ranging from 81 to 127 centimeters (32 to 50 inches) in finished bust circumference. The pattern requires a gauge of 22 stitches by 28 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) on 3.5 mm needles, which is essential for achieving proper fit and drape, particularly in the lacy sections.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle seamless construction, top-down shaping, and lacy stitch techniques. The combination of these elements requires attention to detail and familiarity with circular needle work and stitch manipulation.
