Product Description
This pattern is written in English only. The PDF file contains full instructions for knitting and finishing off a badger with a choice of 2 sweaters and a pair of shorts. Included are instructions to make 2 sweaters, one is in stranded colourwork and the other knitted in a single colour with a textured design.
All pieces of the badger are knitted flat with worsted weight yarn on 3mm needles and all pieces are seamed afterwards. Finished size: approx 23cm (9 inches) from the tip of the toes to the top of the head.
Clothing is knitted from 4ply/fingering weight yarn on 2.75mm needles. The sweater is knitted flat in pieces with the sleeves picked up from the armhole edges of the front and back, and seamed afterwards - with an option to knit the collar in the round. The shorts are worked flat and then seamed.
Badger in a Sweater and Shorts Knitting Pattern
Project Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitted toy pattern designed by Julie Williams featuring a charming badger character dressed in a coordinating sweater and shorts. The finished badger measures approximately 23cm (9 inches) from the tip of the toes to the top of the head, making it an ideal small stuffed animal project for experienced knitters looking to create a whimsical handmade toy.
What is Being Made
The pattern includes three distinct components: a knitted badger body, a fitted sweater, and a pair of shorts. The badger itself is constructed as a complete toy figure, while the clothing pieces are designed to dress the finished animal, creating a charming dressed-up character suitable for display or as a gift.
Badger Body Construction
The badger is knitted using Cascade 220 worsted yarn in three coordinating colorways:
- Yarn A (Natural, shade 8010): Approximately 15 meters/17 yards for cream-colored sections
- Yarn B (Jet, shade 4002): Approximately 38 meters/42 yards for black or very dark grey sections
- Yarn C (Greystone Heather, shade 9491): Approximately 27 meters/30 yards for mid to light grey sections
The multi-color construction creates the badger's distinctive markings and facial features, with black scraps used for additional details like eyes.
Sweater Construction
The badger's sweater is knitted using Drops Safran yarn in two colors: shade 20 Rust and shade 18 White. This garment is worked in 4ply/fingering weight yarn and can be created in up to two colors, allowing for striped or color-blocked design options. The sweater is fitted to the badger's body proportions.
Shorts Construction
The shorts are knitted from BC Garn Allino yarn in shade 02 Light Brown. This component uses 5ply/sport weight yarn, providing a lighter-weight fabric suitable for the smaller garment piece.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate pattern employs standard knitting techniques appropriate for toy construction. The project requires working with multiple yarn weights and colors, which develops skills in color work and yarn management. Knitters will practice shaping techniques necessary for creating three-dimensional toy pieces that fit together cohesively.
Materials and Tools Required
The pattern calls for the following needles and notions:
- A pair of 3mm knitting needles
- A pair of 2.75mm knitting needles
- A tapestry needle for seaming and finishing
- Worsted or light Aran weight yarn in the specified colors and quantities
- 5ply/sport weight yarn for the shorts
- 4ply/fingering weight yarn for the sweater
- Black scraps for embellished details
Yarn Weight and Gauge
The pattern utilizes multiple yarn weights to create appropriate proportions for the different components. The badger body is worked in worsted or light Aran weight yarn, while the sweater uses 4ply/fingering weight for a more delicate fit, and the shorts employ 5ply/sport weight yarn. Gauge information is provided to ensure proper sizing of the finished toy.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with experience in basic shaping and color work. The small scale of the project and the need to work with multiple yarn weights and colors make it an engaging challenge for developing knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques.
