Product Description

Baby Kane was inspired by dear friends expecting new twin babies. I wanted to gift them both new sweaters that were matching yet unique. The fair isle motif was perfect for this and adding the extra color at the yoke was a fun detail.

When you knit multiple sweaters change around the contrast colors for a different variation every time.

Baby sweater knit in one-piece from the top down and includes a sweet fair isle panel along the bottom body.

Also available in Knit Now Magazine Issue 121. Designed with approx. 4"/10cm of built-in ease.

Baby Kane Cardigan by Crystal

Garment Overview

The Baby Kane Cardigan is a charming top-down knit baby sweater designed by Crystal Hiatt. This cardigan was inspired by a gift for twin babies, featuring matching yet unique designs through the use of contrasting fair isle colorwork. The sweater is knit in one piece from the top down, making it an efficient construction method that minimizes seaming. The fair isle motif at the yoke adds visual interest and allows for creative color variations with each knit, making it easy to customize multiple versions by simply changing the contrast colors.

Sizing and Finished Measurements

The Baby Kane Cardigan is available in five size options to accommodate growing babies:

  • 0-6 months with finished chest of 17" / 43 cm
  • 12 months with finished chest of 18" / 46 cm
  • 18 months with finished chest of 19" / 48 cm
  • 2T with finished chest of 21" / 53 cm
  • 4T with finished chest of 23" / 58.5 cm

The pattern includes approximately 4" / 10 cm of ease built into the design, creating an open and loose fit that allows room for growth and comfortable wear over layers.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This intermediate-level cardigan employs several key knitting techniques. The top-down construction method allows knitters to begin at the neckline and work downward, making it simple to try on and adjust fit as needed. The fair isle colorwork technique is featured prominently at the yoke, adding decorative patterning through the use of two colors worked simultaneously. The sweater is knit in the round using circular needles, with stockinette stitch as the primary fabric structure.

Stitches Used

The Baby Kane Cardigan primarily utilizes stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric ideal for babies' garments. The fair isle motif at the yoke incorporates stranded colorwork techniques, where two colors are carried across rows to create the patterned design.

Yarn and Needles

This pattern is designed for worsted weight yarn, which provides excellent stitch definition for the fair isle pattern and creates a durable, easy-care fabric suitable for baby garments. The sample sweater was knit in MillaMia Naturally yarn. Two needle sizes are required:

  • US 7 / 4.5 mm circular needle, 24" / 60 cm (for ribbing and main body)
  • US 8 / 5.0 mm circular needle, 24" / 60 cm (for yoke and colorwork sections)

The gauge is 18 stitches by 24 rows equals 4" / 10 cm when worked in stockinette stitch knit flat and blocked.

Additional Materials and Notions

Beyond yarn and needles, you will need the following notions to complete the Baby Kane Cardigan:

  • Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and seaming
  • 3-4 buttons for the cardigan front closure
  • Thread to secure buttons

Difficulty Level

The Baby Kane Cardigan is rated as an intermediate knitting project. While the top-down construction and stockinette stitch base are accessible to many knitters, the fair isle colorwork at the yoke requires comfort with managing two colors simultaneously and reading stranded colorwork charts. This makes it an ideal project for knitters looking to expand their skills beyond basic garment construction.
