These little diaper cover sets are great sellers also if you have your own shop as you are more than welcome to sell any finished product from my patterns. Photo prop pictures don’t get much cuter than an adorable baby in this little outfit.
Baby Chicken Costume by CraftyStitchaway
What is Being Made
This downloadable crochet pattern creates an adorable baby chicken costume playsuit designed as a photo prop for newborns and infants up to 3 months old. The costume features a charming chicken design complete with a pink pompom accent on the back, making it perfect for capturing those precious first-time baby photos. The pattern is versatile and can be adjusted to larger sizes by using bigger crochet hooks and adding additional stitches and rows to accommodate different infant measurements.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental techniques suitable for crafters with basic to moderate experience. The pattern construction is intentionally straightforward, allowing makers to focus on assembly and finishing details. The design incorporates multiple crochet hook sizes—ranging from 3mm to 5mm—to create different fabric densities and textures throughout the garment, which helps achieve proper fit and structure for a baby playsuit.
Stitches Used
- Slip stitch (sl st) – Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions
- Single crochet (sc) – The primary stitch for building the main fabric of the costume
Materials and Yarn
The costume requires worsted weight yarn as the primary material. The pattern calls for 1 ball of white worsted weight yarn (such as Loops and Threads "Impeccable" brand or any comparable worsted weight option) to form the base of the playsuit. An additional ball of Bernat "Pipsqueak" in Whitey White provides a faux fur texture that creates the chicken's fluffy appearance; alternative fake fur yarns work equally well if this specific brand is unavailable.
Small quantities of red, bright yellow, and black worsted weight yarn are needed for details such as the chicken's beak, comb, and facial features. The pattern also incorporates white feathers (with sharp ends trimmed for safety) and a small white button for embellishment and detail work.
Tools and Notions
- Crochet hooks in sizes 3mm, 4mm, 4.5mm, and 5mm
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
- Glue gun or adhesive glue for securing feathers
- White feathers (trimmed)
- Small white button
Sizing and Customization
The pattern is designed for newborn and 0-3 month sizes. Crafters can easily enlarge the costume by selecting a larger crochet hook size and increasing the number of stitches and rows throughout the pattern, making it adaptable for different infant sizes and growth stages.
