Product Description
My desire was to create a pattern for baby bunny slippers that was as seamless and easy to construct as possible. This pattern is the end result. There are still ends to weave in and one giant seam, but I hope you will find them a fairly simple knit.
This pattern is written for two sizes, newborn and roughly 6-12 months. An in between size could be achieved by using a lighter weight yarn. The pattern is complete with photographs to help guide you through the process. You should easily be able to complete this pattern using less than 100 yards. Most testers used 50 to 60 yards.
Please review the pattern before printing as you may not need or want to print the photo tutorial at the end!
Baby Bunny Slippers by Nickiknitz Designs
What is Being Made
Baby Bunny Slippers are a charming knitted footwear project designed for infants and small children. These slippers feature a bunny-themed construction that combines comfort with whimsical appeal, making them an ideal handmade gift for babies and toddlers.
Craft and Primary Technique
This project uses knitting as the primary craft method. The slippers are constructed using double-pointed needles (DPNs) in the round, which allows for seamless construction and a professional finish. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should have foundational skills including comfort with working in the round and managing multiple stitches simultaneously.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Baby Bunny Slippers pattern employs several essential knitting stitches and techniques:
- Knit (K) – the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric
- Purl (P) – used to create texture variation and detail
- Knit two together (K2tog) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping two stitches individually as if to knit, returning them to the left needle, and knitting them together through the back loop
- Knit front and back (kfb) – an increase technique that creates one additional stitch by working into both the front and back of the same stitch
- Stockinette stitch – the primary fabric texture created by alternating knit and purl rows
- Long tail cast on – the recommended cast-on method, though alternative cast-on methods are permitted
- Working in the round – construction method using DPNs to create seamless pieces
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Baby Bunny Slippers require minimal yardage, making them an economical project. The pattern calls for approximately 25 to 30 grams (50 to 60 yards) of worsted weight yarn. The sample was knit using Red Heart Amore, though the pattern accommodates any worsted weight or heavy double-knit (DK) weight yarn as suitable alternatives.
Additional materials needed include:
- Size US 6 (4.0 mm) double-pointed needles (DPNs) – the primary tool for construction
- Two stitch holders – for managing stitches during construction
- Tapestry needle – for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
- Embellishment options – optional materials for personalizing the bunny design
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches by 24 rows over 4 inches (10.16 cm) in stockinette stitch. However, the pattern notes that gauge is not critical for successful completion. The key measurement requirement is ensuring the piece measures a minimum of 2.5 to 3 inches (6.35 to 7.62 cm) from the cast-on edge before joining in the round, which helps ensure proper fit for baby-sized feet.
Pattern Construction Details
The pattern begins with a long tail cast on of 40 stitches worked relatively loosely. The construction progresses with alternating knit and purl rows on the wrong side and right side, incorporating the decrease and increase stitches mentioned above to shape the slipper form. The use of stitch holders allows for managing multiple sections during construction, and the in-the-round technique on DPNs creates a seamless, professional finish suitable for delicate baby garments.
