Product Description

Your little one will know they are loved wrapped in this cozy super soft blanket. While being gently rocked baby listens to the sound of mommy or daddy's rhythmic heartbeat and quickly falls off to sleep.

Skills needed for the blanket are knit, purl and adding a new color. The baby blanket was worked using Classic Elite Yarns/Summer Set yarn. However, any baby-soft worsted weight yarn will do. Berroco Modern Cotton has lots of fantastic colors to choose from.

A circular needle is used for this pattern however, you will be working straight. The cord helps hold the weight of the blanket as you knit.

Baby Steps Baby Blanket by Joan Laws

What Is Being Made

Baby Steps is a beginner-friendly knitted baby blanket designed by Joan Laws, available in four versatile sizes to suit different needs. The pattern offers options for Preemie (23" x 23"), Full Term (30" x 30"), Stroller (30" x 36"), and Crib (38" x 44") sizes, making it adaptable for various applications from hospital use to crib bedding. This downloadable PDF pattern provides complete instructions for creating a soft, practical blanket suitable for newborns and infants.

Techniques Used

The Baby Steps blanket employs fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for beginners. The construction uses a repeating stitch pattern worked in the round on circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming. The pattern incorporates alternating knit and purl rows to create textural interest and visual dimension. Colorwork is introduced through a simple color-blocking approach using three distinct yarn colors (designated as A, B, and C), allowing crafters to build confidence with basic color changes while creating a visually appealing finished piece.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch (K): The fundamental stitch forming the foundation of the pattern
  • Purl stitch (P): Creates reverse stockinette texture and visual contrast when alternated with knit rows
  • Pattern repeat: A multiple of 32 stitches that repeats across the width, creating consistent design elements throughout the blanket

Materials and Specifications

Yarn: The pattern calls for Classic Elite Yarns Summer Set, a premium blend of 64% Cotton, 19% Alpaca, 12% Polyester, and 5% Lyocel. This fiber composition creates a breathable, soft fabric ideal for delicate baby skin. The yarn is worked at worsted weight (95 yards per 50-gram skein). Yardage requirements vary by size: 2 skeins each of colors A (#2146 Awning), B (#2153 Red), and C (#2150 Yellow) for the Preemie size; 3 skeins each for Full Term; 4 skeins each for Stroller; and 6 skeins each for Crib. Alternative worsted weight yarns may be substituted to customize fiber content or adjust budget.

Needles: US Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needle, 32 inches (80cm) in length, or the size required to achieve proper gauge. Circular needles prevent stitches from sliding off and accommodate the increasing stitch counts across different size options.

Additional Materials: Optional cotton fabric backing (1 to 1.5 yards depending on size) may be added for reinforcement and durability.

Gauge and Construction Details

The pattern specifies a gauge of 17 stitches and 23 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in the stitch pattern. Achieving correct gauge is essential for producing a blanket of the intended finished dimensions. Cast-on stitch counts range from 96 stitches for the Preemie size to 160 stitches for the Crib size, with intermediate counts for other sizes. The structured pattern repeat ensures consistent texture and appearance across the entire blanket surface.
