Product Description
This pattern has been written using UK crochet terms and is suitable for a confident beginner keen to master some new crochet skills and a textured cable stitch. The pattern is a 2 row pattern repeat so you soon get into the rhythm of the pattern and can see clearly where your stitches go as you progress. It can be worked in any weight of yarn, but the pattern is for double knit. I love working with batik and self striping yarns as the colour changing is all done for you creating beautiful effects, and as long as the pattern is simple enough, the yarn and pattern should perfectly complement each other. The pattern name is inspired by an English nursery rhyme involving sheep and wool, and the batik style yarn I used. My husband came up with this little ditty whilst I was making the blanket:
"Baa Baa Batik
For two balls of wool
Something quite chic
And unusual"
And so it became the Baa Baa Batik Blanket. I hope you enjoy making this little blanket.
Baa Baa Batik Blanket by Linda Etheridge
What Is Being Made
The Baa Baa Batik Blanket is a crochet blanket and throw designed by Linda Etheridge of Lindale Crochet. This project creates a finished blanket featuring a distinctive textured cable stitch pattern that works beautifully with self-striping yarns, eliminating the need for manual color changes during construction.
Craft and Technique
This is a crochet project suitable for confident beginners who are ready to master new skills and tackle textured stitchwork. The pattern uses UK crochet terms throughout. The blanket features a 2-row pattern repeat, which means you quickly establish a rhythm and can easily see where your stitches belong as you work through the rows. This repetitive structure makes it easier to maintain consistency and progress confidently through the project.
The pattern is designed to work with any yarn weight, provided you maintain stitch multiples of 6 plus 1. The use of self-striping yarn—such as the Papatya Batik Double Knit yarn used in the original design—creates visual interest and texture variation without requiring you to manage multiple yarn colors or perform color changes.
Stitches Used
- Cable stitch (textured stitch creating dimensional texture)
- Pattern repeat over 2 rows
Materials
Yarn: The original blanket was made using 2 × 100 g balls of Papatya Batik Double Knit yarn. This yarn is 100% premium acrylic and is machine washable, making the finished blanket easy to care for. Double Knit (DK) weight yarn is used for this project, though the pattern is adaptable to other yarn weights as long as stitch multiples are maintained.
Tools: An appropriate crochet hook sized for your chosen yarn weight is required, though the specific hook size is not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt.
