I've only completed the back and half a front so far but I'm a beginner in making garments (only ever made scarves ir throws before) and am finding the pattern quite straight forward to follow once you've worked out the tension/stitch ratios it's really simple. Would recommend 👍
B7 Basic Crochet Cardigan - Crochet Pattern for Women by Valley Yarns
By Valley Yarns
Product Description
A return to our classic Basics line, this time for crochet! This simple, crew-neck, drop-shoulder, bottom-up, seamed cardigan can be worked in any gauge with any weight yarn, though it’s shown here in a worsted weight. Written a little differently from other patterns, this line demonstrates the important relationship between gauge and pattern numbers and pares away distractions from the fundamental structure of the garment, making it a great choice for budding pattern designers. The simple combination of single and half-double crochet rows used here gives you a supple, flexible fabric.
Finished Measurements: 36 (40, 44, 48, 52)” chestYarn Requirements:
DK weight: about 1800 (2000, 2200, 2400, 2600) yds
Worsted weight: about 1500 (1700, 1900, 2100, 2300) yds
Bulky weight: about 1200 (1400, 1600, 1800, 2000) yds
Hook: Size that gives you your desired gauge
Other Materials: desired number of ¾ to 1½" buttons.
Gauge:
It's especially important to make a gauge swatch for this pattern. Crochet a large swatch (4” - 6” square) in the below st pattern at the gauge you'd prefer for the yarn. Wash and block the swatch the same way you'll wash the sweater. Measure how many stitches and rows you have in 4” (this helps accommodate for an uneven gauge), then divide by 4 to figure out how many stitches and rows you have per inch.
In order to be crocheted at any gauge, directions are given in inches instead of a stitch count. So if the directions say to chain 20” worth of stitches for your size, and your gauge is 4 sts to the inch, you'll chain 80 sts.

What is Being Made
The B7 Basic Crochet Cardigan is a classic women's cardigan designed by Sara Delaney for Valley Yarns. This versatile garment features a crew neckline and drop-shoulder construction, making it a timeless wardrobe staple. The cardigan is available in five finished sizes: 36, 40, 44, 48, and 52 inches, accommodating a wide range of body measurements. Button closures complete the front opening, with recommendations for ¾ to 1½ inch buttons depending on personal preference and yarn weight selection.
Construction Technique
This cardigan is constructed using a bottom-up, seamed, worked-flat approach. The garment pieces are crocheted individually in flat rows rather than in the round, then assembled together using seaming techniques. This method allows for excellent control over fit and shaping, making it particularly suitable for achieving clean, professional finishing. The bottom-up construction means you begin at the lower edge and work upward toward the shoulders and neckline, a traditional approach that provides flexibility for adjustments during the crafting process.
Stitches and Techniques
While specific stitch abbreviations are referenced in the pattern instructions, the cardigan employs fundamental crochet stitches worked in a consistent stitch pattern throughout the main body. The pattern emphasizes the importance of maintaining even tension and consistent gauge, particularly because this design works across multiple yarn weights and hook sizes. Crocheters are instructed to create a substantial gauge swatch measuring 4 to 6 inches square in the stitch pattern used for the garment, then wash and block it using the same methods planned for the finished cardigan. This critical step ensures accurate stitch and row counts per inch, which directly impacts the final fit of the garment.
Yarn and Materials
The B7 Basic Crochet Cardigan accommodates three yarn weight options, each with yardage requirements varying by size:
- DK Weight: Approximately 1800 (2000, 2200, 2400, 2600) yards depending on size
- Worsted Weight: Approximately 1500 (1700, 1900, 2100, 2300) yards depending on size
- Bulky Weight: Approximately 1200 (1400, 1600, 1800, 2000) yards depending on size
Crocheters select a crochet hook size appropriate to their chosen yarn weight and desired gauge. Additional materials include stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and construction points, plus buttons in the ¾ to 1½ inch range for the front closure. The flexibility to work in DK, worsted, or bulky weight yarn makes this pattern accessible to crafters with different yarn preferences and desired finished drape.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced beginner, making it suitable for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and simple garment construction but are ready to tackle more complex projects. The emphasis on proper gauge swatching, seaming techniques, and working with multiple sizes requires attention to detail and foundational crochet knowledge, though the straightforward construction method keeps it accessible for those progressing beyond beginner patterns.

Enjoying a new challenge
You need to work out your own number of stitches for the appropriate size and the yarn being used, so a lot of trial and error before getting started. Otherwise a simple pattern (uses US terminology) which is easy to put down and come back to.
