Product Description
The Ayri Tunic is a versatile mid-thigh length sweater, inspired by the ones favored by stylish actresses in LA. Wear it as a tunic over jeans, or make it a little longer to wear with leggings and boots as a sweaterdress. Pattern includes instructions for elbow-length or full-length sleeves.
The tunic is constructed seamlessly from the top down and features raglan sleeves, a scoop neck, and waist shaping for a flattering fit. Simple stranded colorwork diamonds on the upper sleeves and neckband add interest and a splash of color.

Ayri Tunic by Triona Murphy
About This Design
The Ayri Tunic is an intermediate-level knitting pattern created by designer Triona Murphy. This downloadable PDF provides instructions for constructing a tunic-length pullover sweater in multiple sizes, ranging from 30.75" to 60.5" finished bust measurements. The garment is designed to be worn with negative ease, fitting one size smaller than the wearer's actual measurements for an intentionally close, flattering silhouette.
What You Will Make
This pattern produces a knitted tunic sweater suitable for everyday wear. The finished garment is available in eight size options, accommodating a wide range of body measurements from petite to plus-size proportions. The tunic length and fitted design make this a versatile layering piece or standalone garment.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Ayri Tunic employs several popular knitting construction methods, allowing crafters to choose their preferred technique:
- Magic Loop technique — a method for working in the round using a single long circular needle, ideal for knitters who prefer minimalist needle sets
- Two Circulars technique — construction using two separate circular needles simultaneously for in-the-round knitting
- DPNs (Double-Pointed Needles) — traditional needles used for smaller circumference sections
These options provide flexibility for knitters with different equipment preferences and experience levels.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The primary stitch used throughout the Ayri Tunic is Stockinette Stitch (St st), the most fundamental and widely-used knit stitch pattern. Stockinette Stitch creates a smooth, uniform fabric with characteristic V-shaped columns of stitches on the right side, making it an excellent choice for showcasing yarn color and texture. The pattern also incorporates stitch markers to help track pattern repeats and construction sections, and uses scrap yarn or stitch holders to temporarily secure stitches during garment assembly.
Yarn and Materials
The Ayri Tunic is designed to be worked in Knit Picks Swish Bulky, a premium yarn composed of 100% Superwash Merino Wool. This fiber choice provides softness, breathability, and easy care through machine washing. The yarn specifications are 137 yards per 100 grams, classified as a bulky-weight yarn that knits quickly.
Yardage requirements vary by size:
- Sizes XS through M (30.75" to 37.75" bust): 6 or 7 hanks of Main Color (MC) Moss
- Sizes L through XXL (41.25" to 60.5" bust): 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, or 13 hanks of Main Color
- 1 hank of Contrast Color (CC) Silver is required for all sizes
The contrast color creates visual interest and design definition throughout the tunic, likely in ribbing, edging, or accent sections.
Needles Required
The pattern calls for two different needle sizes to achieve proper fabric density and structure:
- US 9 (5.5mm) needles — used for the main body of the garment in Stockinette Stitch. Available in 24-40" circular needle, DPNs, or two 24" circular needles depending on your preferred technique
- US 10 (6.0mm) needles — used for ribbed sections or edging. Available in the same needle format options as the US 9
- A yarn needle for weaving in ends and seaming
Gauge
The pattern specifies a gauge of 14 stitches and 21 rows per 4 inches when worked in Stockinette Stitch on US 9 (5.5mm) needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for the tunic to fit as designed; knitters should always knit and measure a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure proper sizing.
