Axolotl’s are funny creatures. When I first saw a picture of one I couldn’t believe it was real. I kept coming back for another look at their cute faces and I was finally compelled to knit one. I hope you enjoy making one as much as I did!
The pattern is worked in the round on dpns and using icord in parts. I have included photos for parts of the construction.
The body of the axolotl is knitted holding the lurex thread and 4ply acrylic yarn together throughout to give it an underwater sheen.
You will also need stuffing/fibre fill and a small amount of embroidery thread for the face.
This is an advanced-level knitting pattern for creating a charming knitted axolotl toy, designed by Max Alexander. The project combines multiple yarn weights and textures to achieve a realistic underwater creature with distinctive features including iridescent sheen and delicate gills. This downloadable PDF pattern is suitable for experienced knitters seeking a creative and whimsical amigurumi-style toy project.
A three-dimensional knitted axolotl figure featuring the creature's characteristic cute facial expression, body structure, and elaborate gill fronds. The toy is constructed as a stuffed fabric piece using traditional knitting techniques to build dimension and shape.
The axolotl body is created using a sophisticated yarn-holding technique where the lurex thread and 4ply acrylic yarn are held together throughout the knitting process. This dual-yarn method creates an underwater sheen effect that captures light and gives the finished toy an iridescent, aquatic appearance. The combination of smooth acrylic with metallic lurex produces visual depth and dimensionality characteristic of the axolotl's natural coloring.
The pattern employs Double Pointed Needles for the primary construction, which allows for seamless circular knitting ideal for creating three-dimensional toy shapes. Straight needles are incorporated for specific sections requiring flat knitting. The optional crochet hook technique enables detailed gill construction by threading yarns through existing stitches to create the axolotl's distinctive feathery gill fronds.
The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches and abbreviations including:
The pattern specifies a gauge of 15 stitches and 24 rows per 5 centimeters (2 inches) when measured over a stockinette stitch square. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the intended finished size and proportions of the axolotl toy. The 4ply yarn weight combined with the specified needle sizes produces a fabric with appropriate density for stuffed toy construction.
This project is classified as advanced, making it suitable for knitters with solid experience in fundamental techniques and comfort with more complex construction methods. The advanced classification reflects the multi-yarn technique, use of double-pointed needles for seamless construction, optional crochet embellishments, and the spatial reasoning required to assemble a three-dimensional creature with realistic proportions.

Great have knitted this for my granddaughter
This pattern was easy enough to knit and didn't take long. I did cheat though as I used versions of the two Axolotl patterns to achieve the result that great grandson wanted.
