Product Description
This pattern is for an overlay mosaic crochet square that can be used in other types of projects, such as blankets, pillows, satchel bags, table mats, etc.
Any yarn or hook will work, depending on the desired size of the finished square. I used yarn weight of 4 with a 5.5 hook, which creates a square of 13.5” x 13”.
You will need approximately 4 oz of a worsted or aran (wt 4) type of yarn, which comes out to around 200 yards. The sample images uses a variety of colors for the background - sand, white, and shades of teal/aqua, however you could also do the background in one solid color. The crab was done in coral.
Pattern is in US crochet terms.

Crochet Techniques Used
Mosaic Crochet is the primary technique featured in this pattern. Mosaic crochet creates interesting shapes and textures by using graph charts to guide stitch placement. This method allows crocheters to build detailed images and patterns through strategic color changes and stitch positioning. While mosaic crochet can initially appear complex when reading graph charts, this pattern is designed to make the technique accessible to crocheters with intermediate experience and basic familiarity with stitch recognition and crochet terminology.
Stitches and Construction
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches combined through mosaic crochet methodology. Crocheters should have experience recognizing stitches and understanding standard crochet terms to successfully complete this project. The mosaic technique relies on graph chart interpretation to determine stitch placement and create the crab motif.
Materials Required
- Yarn Weight: Aran or worsted weight yarn, providing a medium thickness suitable for clear stitch definition and mosaic pattern visibility
- Crochet Hook: Appropriate hook size for selected yarn weight (specific size determined by yarn manufacturer recommendations)
