Product Description
This pattern was designed and tested in Autumn, reflecting the colours of the changing trees, and the textures of the falling leaves and seeds. I wanted an asymmetrical shawl, which drapes beautifully with nz indie dyed yarn. I used 3 different colour skeins of Revive Designs, 4ply Merino Sock Yarn. The pattern increases, and then decreases to get the triangular shaping. It works both eyelet panels, and a ridge panel, mixed with garter stitch.
This shawl pattern would look lovely in any fingering or sock yarn, and can be knit on straight or interchangeable 4mm needles. Choose three complementary colours and go for it.

Autumn Notes Shawl by Rachy Knits
What Is Being Made
The Autumn Notes Shawl is an asymmetrical knitted shawl designed by Rachel Kleynhans of Rachy Knits. This one-size shawl features a triangular shape and is specifically designed to drape beautifully, making it an ideal accessory for layering or wearing as a wrap. The design was inspired by autumn's changing season, incorporating visual and textural elements that evoke falling leaves and seeds through its stitch pattern work.
Techniques Used
This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive look and structure. The shawl uses increases and decreases to create the triangular shaping characteristic of asymmetrical shawl construction. The pattern combines multiple stitch techniques to build visual interest and texture throughout the piece, allowing knitters with some experience to develop their skills while creating a finished garment with professional drape and movement.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The Autumn Notes Shawl incorporates a variety of stitches to create its textured appearance:
- Eyelet panels – These openwork sections add delicate, lacy elements to the shawl
- Ridge panel – This textured section provides visual contrast and dimensional interest
- Garter stitch – Mixed throughout the pattern, this fundamental stitch creates a classic, textured base
The combination of these stitches creates a balanced design that showcases both openwork and solid sections, reflecting the organic patterns found in nature during the autumn season.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
This pattern is designed for 4ply yarn, specifically suited to fingering-weight merino or sock yarn. The designer recommends using indie-dyed yarn to enhance the shawl's visual appeal, as the varied colorways complement the asymmetrical design and autumn-inspired aesthetic. The original pattern was created and tested using Revive Designs 4ply Merino Sock Yarn. Knitters are encouraged to select their favorite indie-dyed yarn in this weight category to personalize their finished shawl while maintaining the intended drape and structure.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
The Autumn Notes Shawl is rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, suitable for knitters with some experience. This downloadable PDF pattern is designed for private use and includes all necessary instructions to complete the one-size shawl. The pattern encourages finished projects to be shared on social media using the hashtags #autumnnotesshawl and #RachyKnits, allowing knitters to showcase their interpretations of this seasonal design.
