Product Description
Pay that toll, step up to pay the bus fare, or even retrieve your license and registration for the cop that stopped you for that tiny indiscretion. All while keeping your hands toasty warm!
Skills needed for working the mitts are working in the round, k/fb, knit, purl, and adding a new color. The Autumn Fingerless Gloves worked using Berroco/Touché; 50% Cotton/50% Rayon. However, any worsted weight yarn will do. Berroco Vintage has lots of fantastic colors for you.
Autumn Fingerless Gloves by Joan Laws
What is Being Made
The Autumn Fingerless Gloves are a pair of adult female fingerless mitts designed to provide warmth while keeping fingers free for dexterity and tactile work. Sized for a 6.5-inch (16.5 centimeter) circumference, these gloves feature a classic fingerless construction ideal for transitional seasons or layering. The design showcases color blocking with three distinct yarn colors creating a striped, seasonal aesthetic.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs circular knitting worked in the round using two circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates seamless, tubular fabric. The pattern incorporates color changes to transition between the three yarn colors, creating horizontal stripes throughout the glove. Increases are strategically placed to accommodate thumb placement, using the kfb (knit front and back) increase method to shape the glove around the hand. Stitch markers are used to track pattern sections and increase placement points.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) – The primary fabric stitch worked in rounds, creating a smooth, V-patterned knit surface
- Ribbing – Alternating knit and purl stitches (k1, p1) used for the cuff to create elasticity and a fitted edge
- Kfb (Knit Front and Back) – An increase technique used for thumb gusset shaping
Materials
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, with the original design using Berroco Touché, a blend of 50% cotton and 50% rayon. Three colors are required: harvest red (#7941), pumpkin (#7970), and sage green (#7923), with one skein of each color needed (approximately 89 yards or 82 meters per skein). Needles required include two US size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 centimeters), along with two stitch markers and one stitch holder or scrap yarn for holding stitches. The recommended gauge is 19.5 stitches and 30 rounds per 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch worked in rounds.
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with circular needles, manage color changes, and execute shaping techniques like increases for thumb placement.
