Product Description
Enjoy wearing these great-fitting fingerless mitts/gloves, easy to knit mitts that you can personalize with your astrological sign.
Large, easy to read charts are included for every sign: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo (shown), Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
Since the charts are quick and uncomplicated, you can add the choice of signs to your mitts with duplicate stitch in a contrasting color.
You could also add the signs to any other knitted project that has a free area of 17 stitches by 19 rows/rnds.
NOTE: You will need one full skein of 135 yds for the mitts and just a couple yards for the duplicate stitch.
Astro Mitts by Sharon Mooney
What Is Being Made
Astro Mitts are a pair of knitted mittens designed by Sharon Mooney, featuring a celestial-themed pattern. These are block mittens that measure 7.5 inches (19 centimeters) in circumference at the widest point just above the thumb gusset opening, with a total height of 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) at the longest point. The design combines a main color base with contrasting color embroidered details to create the decorative astro motif.
Craft and Techniques
Astro Mitts are created using the knitting craft, classified as an intermediatethumb gusset, which is a shaped section that allows for proper thumb placement and fit. The design utilizes chart-based colorwork, where embroidery is used to add the celestial pattern details after the base mittens are knitted. This two-color approach—using a main color for the foundation and a contrasting color for embellished details—creates visual interest while keeping the knitting construction straightforward.
Stitches and Pattern Elements
The pattern uses standard knitting stitches worked in the round. Key structural elements include:
- Stitch markers placed at the beginning of each round and at the four corners of the chart area to track pattern placement
- Ring stitch markers specifically used to mark the thumb gusset sections
- Embroidery stitches applied after knitting is complete, using a yarn needle or large embroidery needle to add the contrasting color details that form the astro design
- A gauge of 6 stitches and 8 rounds per 1 inch (2.5 centimeters), which is essential for achieving proper fit
Materials and Yarn
Astro Mitts are designed to use DK weight or heavy sport weight yarn. The pattern specifically calls for Cascade Yarns "220 Superwash Sport," which is 100% Superwash Merino Wool. Two skeins are required: one in the main color of choice and one in a contrasting color for embroidery. Each skein contains 136 yards (125 meters) and weighs 1.75 ounces (50 grams). The yarn is superwash treated, making the finished mittens easy to care for and suitable for frequent washing.
The pattern recommends using size US 4/3.75mm double pointed needles for the standard size. For knitters working with heavier DK weight yarn or desiring a larger mitt, size US 5/3.75mm double pointed needles are suggested. Additional materials include two ring stitch markers for the thumb gusset and five locking stitch markers for chart placement, along with a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for finishing the embroidered details.
Design Notes
The Astro Mitts pattern (K647) is an original design by Sharon E. Mooney, copyrighted in 2019. The pattern is flexible regarding yarn color choices, allowing crafters to select any main color and contrasting color combination that appeals to them. The use of superwash merino wool ensures durability and easy maintenance, making these mittens both beautiful and practical for everyday wear.
