What is Being Made

The Askew Cowl is a reversible cowl knit lengthwise on the bias. This design offers versatility, allowing knitters to customize the length to their preference by determining when to finish the piece. Available in two sizes—Small (S) and Large (L)—this cowl provides a warm yet lightweight accessory suitable for various styling needs.

Construction and Techniques

This advanced-level pattern employs several specialized knitting techniques. The cowl is knit lengthwise on the bias, which creates an interesting directional fabric and contributes to the garment's unique aesthetic. The pattern requires familiarity with a provisional cast on, a technique that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless construction. The seaming method is specifically designed for the brioche stitch pattern used throughout, creating a virtually invisible graft when joining the ends together. This specialized grafting technique is essential to maintaining the reversible quality and polished appearance of the finished cowl.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern featured in the Askew Cowl is the knit-1-below brioche stitch. This textured stitch creates fabric with excellent drape and visual interest. Stockinette stitch is also referenced in the pattern, used as the basis for gauge measurement.

Materials and Specifications

The Askew Cowl is designed to be worked with DK weight yarn. The pattern specifically recommends Silky Merino by Malabrigo Yarn, which provides nice flow and drape in the finished fabric. This yarn choice contributes to the cowl's warm yet lightweight character, making it comfortable for extended wear.

Gauge: 20 stitches by 26 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on US 8 (5.0 mm) needles.

Difficulty Level: Advanced. This pattern is best suited for experienced knitters with familiarity in provisional cast-on techniques and grafting methods.
