What is Being Made
The Ashworth Scarf is a luxurious laceweight knit scarf designed by Laura Chau. This elegant accessory measures approximately 60" x 12" (152cm x 30cm) when blocked, though the size is adjustable based on yardage used. The scarf is crafted to be reversible, making it a versatile piece that works beautifully from either side.
Design and Construction
This scarf features chic oversized cables that alternate sides, creating a reversible fabric with visual impact. The cable pattern provides maximum visual punch while requiring minimal effort from the knitter. The laceweight construction allows the fabric to scrunch and drape in fantastic ways, creating an ethereal quality that makes this scarf exceptionally versatile for styling. The reversible design means you get two finished looks from a single project.
Yarn and Materials
The Ashworth Scarf requires approximately 1200 yards of laceweight yarn. The pattern is shown worked in Jade Sapphire Mongolian Cashmere 2-ply in the colorway Silver Pearl (100% cashmere), using 3 skeins of 400 yards per 55g skein. The designer notes that if cashmere is not within budget, the softest available merino or alpaca laceweight yarn will produce beautiful results. Each additional 400 yards of yarn will extend the scarf length by approximately 20" (51cm), allowing for customization.
Needles and Tools
This project requires US 2 / 2.75mm circular or straight needles and a cable needle of similar diameter (or alternatively, a double pointed needle can be used). The small needle size is appropriate for working with delicate laceweight yarn and maintaining the intricate cable pattern.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Ashworth Scarf is an intermediate-level knitting project that incorporates cable knitting techniques. The oversized cables are the signature design element, requiring the knitter to use a cable needle to create the characteristic twisted rope effect. Working with laceweight yarn demands attention to detail and tension control, though the cable-focused construction keeps the pattern straightforward rather than overly complex. The reversible nature of the design showcases how thoughtful cable placement can create a garment that is equally beautiful on both sides.
Finished Fabric Qualities
The combination of laceweight yarn and cable construction creates a soft, silky, and luxurious fabric with an ethereal quality. The scarf has excellent drape and movement, scrunching beautifully around the neck while maintaining its structure. This is described as the scarf you'll keep reaching for repeatedly, making it both a practical accessory and a treasured handmade piece.
