Arthur's Baby Blanket by Caisha Doney

Project Overview

Arthur's Baby Blanket is a beginner-friendly knitted blanket designed by Caisha Doney. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished blanket measuring approximately 70 x 88cm (27.5 x 34.5 inches), making it an ideal size for a baby blanket or small throw. The design is accessible to knitters new to the craft while producing a beautiful, functional finished piece.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This blanket is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The pattern employs garter stitch as the primary stitch structure, which creates a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges. Garter stitch is formed by knitting every row, making it one of the most straightforward and forgiving stitch patterns for new knitters.

The blanket features a structured border design, with 20 stitches reserved on either side to create defined edges. The central body of the blanket uses a repeating stitch pattern based on multiples of 3 stitches plus 1 additional stitch, allowing for customization of the finished size by adjusting the number of cast-on stitches.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (K): The fundamental stitch that forms the basis of garter stitch
  • Purl (P): Used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Knit two together (K2tog): A decrease stitch that reduces stitch count and creates shaping
  • Yarn over (YO): An increase stitch that creates decorative eyelet holes and adds stitch count

Materials and Equipment

The pattern calls for Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn, providing a substantial fabric suitable for a baby blanket. The suggested yarn is Hayfield Bonus Aran with Wool in Light Stone, requiring one 400g ball (840m/919 yards). However, the pattern is flexible and works with any Aran or heavy worsted weight yarn of similar yardage.

Knitting equipment required includes a 5mm circular knitting needle measuring 60cm in length (US size 8, 24 inches) and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends. The circular needle accommodates the width of the blanket while the length allows for comfortable working of the flat fabric.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of 16 stitches and 33 rows in garter stitch over a 10cm square (4-inch square). The pattern notes that exact gauge is not essential for this project, as variations in personal knitting tension will result in proportionally smaller or larger finished blankets. This flexibility makes the pattern particularly beginner-friendly, as achieving precise gauge can be challenging for new knitters.

Customization Options

The blanket size can be altered by adjusting the number of stitches cast on in the central body section, using multiples of 3 stitches plus 1 (not including the 20 border stitches on each side). This allows knitters to create a custom-sized blanket suited to their specific needs while maintaining the pattern's structural integrity.
