Arthur the Alien Knitted Doll
What is Being Made
Arthur the Alien is a charming knitted stuffed doll designed by Penny Connor. This lovable little alien character stands approximately 20cm (8 inches) high when completed and makes an excellent handmade toy or decorative piece. The pattern is ideal for crafters looking to use up yarn scraps and stash ends, as it incorporates multiple yarn colors while requiring only small quantities of each shade.
Craft and Technique Overview
This is an intermediate-level knitting project that combines fundamental knitting techniques with three-dimensional toy construction. The pattern employs standard knitting methods to create a stuffed doll that requires assembly and finishing touches. The project demonstrates practical applications of tension control and color work in toy making, allowing knitters to customize Arthur's appearance based on their yarn preferences and available stash materials.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Knit (K) - Basic knit stitch forming the foundation of the fabric
- K2tog - Knit two stitches together for decreasing and shaping
- K3tog - Knit three stitches together for more aggressive decreasing
- M1 (Make 1) - Increase stitch by lifting the horizontal strand between stitches
- Toy stuffing and assembly - Construction of three-dimensional form through strategic increases and decreases
Materials Required
The pattern calls for DK (double knitting) weight yarn as the primary material. Specific yarn requirements include:
- Approximately 1 x 50g ball of green DK yarn (main color)
- Small amounts of DK yarn in blue, white, purple, and pink (for details and the jumper)
- Small amount of black DK yarn (for features)
- Black felt (for pupils)
- Toy stuffing (for filling the completed doll)
- One pair of 3.25mm knitting needles
Design Features
Arthur comes complete with a customizable little jumper that can be tailored to match any color preference from your yarn stash. The doll's facial features are created using a combination of knitted elements and black felt pupils, adding character and charm to the finished piece. The pattern's flexibility in color selection makes each Arthur unique and allows knitters to create multiple versions using different yarn combinations.
