Product Description
The Aroya Cowl is an easy cowl to knit and a fun one to wear. The cowl is tall enough that it can be pulled up over the head as a hood, but the fabric is soft enough that it settles nicely around the neck when worn as a cowl.
This one is knit on any 3/8" gauge loom with a minimum of 71 pegs. The All N One loom is my favorite for this type of project.
Approximately 280 yards of a worsted weight yarn is needed for this cowl. I used Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in the Purple colorway for this sample.
The pattern is suitable for a novice loom knitter.

What Is Being Made
The Aroya Cowl is a knitted cowl neck accessory designed by Dayna Scoles. This project creates a versatile neck warmer suitable for various seasons and occasions, offering both comfort and style to the wearer.
Craft and Loom Type
This cowl is created using loom knitting, a fiber arts technique that differs from traditional needle knitting. The project utilizes a 3/8" gauge All-N-One loom, which is a versatile tool that allows crafters to create various projects by adjusting peg spacing and configuration. Loom knitting is an accessible method for creating knitted fabrics and is particularly beginner-friendly, as it eliminates some of the complexity associated with managing two needles simultaneously.
Stitches and Techniques Used
The Aroya Cowl incorporates several fundamental loom knitting stitches and techniques:
- E-wrap knit: A basic stitch performed by wrapping yarn around pegs in a specific pattern to create knitted loops
- Purl: A reverse stitch that creates texture variation in the fabric
- Slip stitch (s): A technique where a stitch is bypassed by placing the working yarn behind the peg and continuing to the next peg, used for shaping and pattern work
- Knit 2 together (k2tog): A decrease technique performed over two adjacent pegs by moving a loop from one peg to another, wrapping, and lifting loops over the new wrap to reduce stitch count
- Double E-Wrap Cast On (2ewCO): A casting on method that creates stitches directly on empty pegs using two consecutive e-wraps and loop manipulation, eliminating the need for a separate crochet hook
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Aroya Cowl requires approximately 280 yards of worsted weight yarn, classified as aran weight [4] in standard yarn weight systems. The sample shown in the pattern was created using Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn in the Purple colorway, demonstrating the project's compatibility with readily available commercial yarn brands. This yardage amount makes the cowl an efficient project that can be completed relatively quickly while still providing substantial fabric coverage.
Difficulty Level
The Aroya Cowl is rated as a beginner level project, making it an excellent choice for those new to loom knitting. The pattern teaches fundamental techniques and stitches in an accessible way, with video support available for techniques such as alternative cast-on methods that do not require additional tools like crochet hooks.
