Product Description

CONSTRUCTION:

The yoke of this dress is worked seamlessly from the top down, first flat with some short row shaping, then in the round until underarm level. The sleeves are then separated from the body, which is worked in one piece to the hem, featuring a dropped waist and a hi-low skirt shaped by short rows (link to video tutorial provided). The sleeve stitches are returned to the needles and worked in the round (4 sleeve length options are suggested). Stitches are picked up around the back neck opening to work the button loop closure. Alternatively two ribbons can be sewn to the neckline edges.

SKILLS REQUIRED:

Casting on, knitting, purling, increasing, decreasing, yarn over, knitting in the round, picking up stitches, binding off, short rows (detailed instructions and links to tutorials provided), binding off, wet-blocking.

Ariadne Knitted Dress by Frogginette Knitting Patterns

What Is Being Made

Ariadne is a knitted dress pattern designed by Lisa Chemery for infants through children. The pattern offers ten size options ranging from 3 months to 10 years old, with garment chest circumferences spanning from 18.5 inches (47 cm) for the smallest size up to 29.5 inches (75 cm) for the largest size. This versatile design accommodates growing children and allows knitters to customize fit based on the recipient's actual measurements rather than relying solely on age labels.

Techniques and Construction

Ariadne employs circular knitting techniques as the primary construction method. The pattern utilizes top-down construction, a modern approach that allows knitters to try on the garment during the knitting process and easily adjust length. For sizes designed for 4-year-olds and older, the pattern incorporates seamless sleeve construction using double-pointed needles (dpns), which creates a continuous tube without seams for comfort and durability. The neckline and hem finishing are worked on smaller circular needles to create neat, professional edges.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The foundation of this dress is built on stockinette stitch, a fundamental knitting stitch that creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side. Stockinette stitch is ideal for children's garments as it provides a soft, comfortable wearing surface and allows yarn color and texture to be the visual focus of the design.

Materials and Gauge

Ariadne is designed to work with DK, worsted, and aran weight yarns, offering flexibility in yarn selection based on desired fabric weight and drape. The pattern requires:

  • US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles in 16-inch (40 cm) length for the main garment body and sleeves
  • US 6 (4 mm) circular needles in 24-inch (60 cm) length for neckline and hem ribbing (one size smaller than the main needles to create a snug, elastic finish)
  • Matching double-pointed needles of the same diameter as the main needles for seamless sleeve construction on larger sizes

Knitters should match the stockinette stitch gauge specified in the pattern to ensure proper fit across all size options. Gauge is critical when knitting garments for children, as even small variations can significantly affect whether the dress fits properly.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The intermediate classification reflects the requirement to work with circular needles, manage multiple stitches, and potentially work seamless sleeves using dpns, while still remaining accessible to knitters beyond the absolute beginner stage.
