Product Description

This is a pattern done on the new 120 peg 3/8" gauge Universal X Loom by Cindwood. It has a video tutorial and creates a special shaped crown for a cool yet simple design element on a simple stitch as a rib stitch. Great start to working with some fun on the new x loom if you are still getting the hang of it. I also provide instructions for if you have the 1/2" gauge in the smaller 96 peg sizing to do a smaller size. Due to the rib stitch having spring it will fit from a toddler to an adult by simply folding the brim. I used almost a single skein of the Yarn Bee Tender Touch so it will use some yardage but you really should only need 1 skein of anything. Might need 2 if you choose the larger gauge to make one.

Arch Rib Hat X Loom by Scarlett Royale

Project Overview

The Arch Rib Hat X Loom is an intermediate-level knitting loom project designed by independent designer Scarlett Royale. This downloadable PDF pattern guides makers through creating a finished hat using loom knitting techniques, a method that offers an accessible alternative to traditional needle knitting while producing professional results.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a finished hat featuring an arch rib stitch construction. The hat is designed to be worked on a universal loom using the flat knit and purl techniques to create texture and structure. The arch rib pattern creates visual interest through alternating knit and purl stitches that form a distinctive ribbed appearance.

Loom and Equipment

This project is worked on a universal x loom and offers flexibility in loom size selection:

  • 120 peg loom with 3/8" gauge, or
  • 96 peg loom with 1/2" gauge

Additional tools required include a looming hook for manipulating stitches during the knitting process.

Yarn and Materials

The Arch Rib Hat X Loom is worked in chunky weight worsted yarn, requiring approximately 100 to 120 yards total. The chunky yarn weight ensures faster project completion and creates a substantial, cozy finished garment suitable for cold weather wear.

Stitches and Techniques Used

This pattern incorporates several fundamental loom knitting stitches and techniques:

  • DW CO (Double Wrap Cast On): A cast-on method involving E-wrapping each peg twice, then tossing the bottom loop over the top. This technique is particularly effective for EFG loom applications and creates a secure foundation for the project.
  • K (Flat Knit): The basic flat knit stitch, executed by tossing the bottom loop over the top loop to create knit fabric.
  • P (Purl): The purl stitch is created by pulling the working yarn from the bottom of the stitch through to the top, removing the existing stitch, and placing the new stitch on the peg. Alternating knit and purl stitches creates the ribbed texture characteristic of this hat.
  • K2tog (Knit 2 Stitches Together): A decrease technique executed by tossing 2 loops over the top working strand, used to shape the crown of the hat.
  • WD (Wedge Decrease): An advanced shaping technique involving moving the wedge down one notch to the next set of pegs, moving the last set of stitches over to the wedge pegs on each side, then knitting the 2 stitches together on the wedge pegs. This method creates smooth, professional-looking decreases.
  • DSBO (Draw String Bind Off): The finishing technique where the tail is sent through every other stitch and the stitch is removed after the tail passes through, creating a secure and neat edge.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for makers with foundational loom knitting experience. The combination of basic stitches with shaping techniques such as wedge decreases and the structured arch rib pattern requires comfort with loom manipulation and stitch management.

Additional Resources

The pattern includes reference to a video tutorial that provides visual guidance for completing the project, making it an excellent resource for both visual learners and those seeking clarification on specific techniques.
