Product Description

Questions on the instructions? Contact me here on Ravelry, or email me at woolybearhandknits@yahoo.com. A summer sun dress for your little darling! The twisted rib stretchy bodice gently flares into the lacy leaf skirt. Buttons on the shoulders make it easy to put on over baby’s head. Armholes and neck are edged with comfortable I-cord that is created as you knit the bodice (not attached later). Add a pretty knitted Apple Blossom at the waist.

The black squares on the graph are just placeholders to help the graph line up. They do not represent a stitch - please skip right over them when reading the graph.

For those of you who bought the very first printed patterns: Notes: RT means right twist, or right cross (which is defined in the stitch key); and, the stitch key should only give right side definitions, as you are working in the round.

Apple Blossom Sundress by Cheryl Andrews

What Is Being Made

The Apple Blossom Sundress is a charming summer knitted dress designed for babies and toddlers, available in four sizes ranging from 3-6 months through 18-24 months. This downloadable knitting pattern from Wooly Bear Hand Knits creates a practical yet decorative garment featuring a fitted ribbed bodice that transitions into a flowing lacy skirt. The dress is completed with a decorative knitted Apple Blossom flower accent positioned at the waist. Shoulder buttons allow for easy dressing over baby's head, making this sundress both functional and stylish for warm weather wear.

Construction Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key construction techniques to create a well-fitted and comfortable garment. The bodice is constructed using a twisted rib pattern that provides stretch and gentle shaping around the torso. The skirt section features lacy leaf stitch work that creates an airy, decorative visual effect as it flares outward from the fitted bodice.

A notable construction feature is the use of I-cord edging applied to the armholes and neckline. Rather than being attached as a finishing step, the I-cord is created as an integral part of the bodice knitting process, ensuring a secure and professional-looking edge. The pattern also incorporates a provisional cast-on technique using waste yarn, which allows for seamless joining or adjustment during construction.

Stitches and Stitch Details

  • Twisted Rib: Used throughout the bodice to create stretch and structure while maintaining a flattering fit for baby's torso
  • Lacy Leaf Stitch: Applied to the skirt section to create an open, decorative pattern with a botanical theme that complements the Apple Blossom flower accent
  • I-Cord: Knitted directly into the armholes and neckline edges for a finished, comfortable edge that requires no separate attachment
  • Stockinette Stitch: Likely used in sections of the bodice and as a foundation for other stitch patterns

Materials and Tools

Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn in quantities that scale with size: approximately 200 yards for the smallest size (3-6 months) up to 500 yards for the largest size (18-24 months). The pattern suggests suitable yarn options including Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, Cascade Sierra, or Jil Eaton Cottontail—all excellent choices for a breathable, comfortable summer dress. Additional fingering weight yarn in two coordinating colors is needed in small amounts for knitting the decorative Apple Blossom flower. Waste yarn of the same or lighter weight is required for the provisional cast-on and as a stitch holder during construction.

Needles and Tools: The project requires US size 8 circular needles in 29-inch length for working the wider sections, US size 6 circular needles in 16-inch length for smaller circumferences, and US size 6 double-pointed needles for detailed work such as the I-cord edging and flower creation.

Sizing Information

The Apple Blossom Sundress is offered in four baby and toddler sizes with the following finished measurements:

  • 3-6 months: Finished chest 18 inches, bodice length 6.5 inches, skirt length 7 inches
  • 6-12 months: Finished chest 20 inches, bodice length 7.5 inches, skirt length 9 inches
