Product Description
Hi, my name is Annette and this is my version of a 'Toe up' Vanilla sock with heel and gusset shaping.
I've been knitting a version of this sock for so long, it had never occurred to me to write it down until a friend asked me - "What pattern do you use for your toe up socks?" I'm sure there must have been an original pattern that I referenced all those moons ago, but I cannot remember it. However, over the years, the pattern has grown with me, adapting with my knitting ability and new techniques picked up from here and there.
Enjoy these socks. May they adapt with you to make many treasured versions.
Annette's Toe Up Vanilla Socks
What is Being Made
Annette's Toe Up Vanilla Socks is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by Anneknitty (Annette Traves) for creating classic socks using the toe-up construction method. This pattern offers five different sizes with foot circumferences ranging from 17.5cm to 22.5cm, accommodating UK shoe sizes 1–3, 4–6, 7–9, 10–12, and additional sizing. The pattern includes adjustable foot length options to customize the finished socks to individual measurements.
Techniques Used
The socks are constructed using the toe-up method, a popular technique that begins knitting at the toe and progresses toward the cuff. This approach allows knitters to try on the socks during construction and adjust the leg length before binding off. The pattern employs the Magic Loop technique, a method for working small circumference projects like socks on long circular needles without requiring double-pointed needles. This technique creates seamless, tubular fabric ideal for sock construction.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches and shaping techniques including:
- Knit (k) – the basic knit stitch
- Purl (p) – the basic purl stitch
- Knit 2 together (k2tog) – a right-leaning decrease
- Purl 2 together (p2tog) – a purl decrease
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk) – a left-leaning decrease formed by slipping two stitches knitwise and knitting them together
- Slip stitches (sl) – stitches moved from one needle to another
These stitches are worked in rounds (rnd) to create the seamless construction characteristic of toe-up socks.
Materials and Yarn
The pattern recommends Third Vault Yarns Librarian sock yarn in the shade Destiny. This yarn is composed of 75% Bluefaced Leicester and 25% Nylon, providing durability and elasticity. The yarn weight is 4ply/fingering weight with a yardage of 425 meters per 100 grams, a standard specification for sock knitting. The pattern notes that knitters can substitute hand-dyed or commercial yarn of the same weight and characteristics.
Required tools include 2.5mm (US 1.5) long circular needles for executing the Magic Loop technique, small stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends upon completion.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle more structured projects. The toe-up construction method and Magic Loop technique require familiarity with circular needle work and basic decreases, but the pattern provides clear abbreviations and instructions to guide knitters through the process.
