Product Description
This sophisticated, classic and sensually-satisfying cowl floats around your neck with it's oversized silhouette. Knit on #10s, the lace is reminiscent of Angel's Wings (thus, the name), giving you a hug from the angels.
The lace stitches are both charted and written out.
The sample used approx 80% of a skein of Spring Gate's cashmere/silk/merino blend but any fingering weight yarn would work for this ... a hand-dyed sock yarn would be gorgeous!
Angel's Wings Cowl by MaryG Knits
Project Overview
The Angel's Wings Cowl is an advanced knitting project designed to provide warmth and sophistication through elegant lace detailing. This cowl is knitted in the round, which allows for faster and more efficient knitting compared to flat construction. The finished cowl measures 26 inches in circumference and 8.25 inches in length, making it a versatile accessory suitable for layering over shoulders or wearing as a traditional neck cowl.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires approximately 150 yards of fingering weight yarn. The sample shown uses Spring Gate Farm's luxury blend featuring 50% Cashmere, 25% Silk, and 25% Merino in the colorway Lapis Lazuli. This particular fiber combination was chosen for its exceptional draping qualities, which showcase the lace pattern beautifully. Knitters may substitute with any fingering weight yarn of similar yardage and characteristics.
Additional materials include:
- US #10 circular needles, 16 inches in length
- Stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
- Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked at a gauge of 4 stitches by 6 rounds per 1 inch of stockinette stitch in the round, measured before blocking. Understanding and achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions of 26 inches around by 8.25 inches in length.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Angel's Wings Cowl employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques worked in the round. Circular needle knitting allows for seamless construction and continuous spiral knitting without the need for seaming.
Primary stitches and techniques used include:
- Stockinette stitch in the round: Created by knitting every round, this stitch produces a smooth, V-textured fabric that serves as the base for the lace pattern.
- Garter stitch in the round: Achieved by alternating knit rounds and purl rounds, creating horizontal ridges. This textured stitch provides structural interest and is used strategically within the design.
- Yarn overs (yo): These create the openwork characteristic of lace knitting, producing decorative holes and increasing stitch count within the pattern.
- Knit two together (k2tog): A right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count and works in conjunction with yarn overs to maintain stitch count across pattern repeats.
- Slip, slip, knit (ssk): A left-leaning decrease that provides balanced shaping and lace pattern symmetry.
Angel's Wings Lace Pattern
The signature Angel's Wings lace pattern is the focal point of this cowl design. This stitch pattern operates on a multiple of 12 stitches and repeats over 10 rounds, creating a consistent, symmetrical motif throughout the cowl.
Pattern structure:
- Round 1: [k4, k2tog, yo, k, yo, ssk, k3] repeated across all stitches
- Round 2: Knit all stitches
- Round 3: [k3, k2tog, yo, k3, yo, ssk, k2] repeated across all stitches
- Round 4: Knit all stitches
- Round 5: [k2, k2tog, yo, k5, yo, ssk, k1] repeated across all stitches
- Rounds 6–10: Knit all stitches
This 10-round repeat creates a graduated lace motif that expands and contracts, forming the characteristic "wings" effect. The strategic placement of decreases and yarn overs creates a balanced, visually dynamic pattern that becomes more pronounced when the finished cowl is blocked and worn.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an advanced project, the Angel's Wings Cowl requires solid foundational knitting skills. Knitters should be comfortable working in the round on circular needles, reading lace charts or written instructions, and executing multiple decrease and yarn-over techniques within a single pattern repeat. The combination of lace work with garter and stockinette
