This hat and scarf set were designed to look like Andes Mints - those wonderful chocolatey minty foil-wrapped treats. The Hat is in three sizes and two striping patterns, with a hem. Hats will stretch to fit head larger than finished circumference. The Scarf is very long and skinny, and is worked on the larger needle. The name Andes Mint (TM) is being used with permission from Tootsie Roll Industries. Thanks, Tootsie Roll people!

Andes Mint™ Hat and Scarf Set by Cheryl Andrews

What Is Being Made

The Andes Mint™ Hat and Scarf set is a coordinated knitting project designed to evoke the appearance of Andes Mints—the iconic chocolate and mint foil-wrapped candies. This set includes a knitted hat available in three sizes with two different striping pattern options and a hem, paired with a distinctively long and skinny scarf. Together, these pieces create a themed accessory collection with visual appeal inspired by the classic confection's brown and green color palette.

Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several fundamental and intermediate techniques. The hat construction utilizes both circular needles and double-pointed needles to shape the crown and create a finished hem. The scarf is worked on circular needles in a long, narrow format. Striping is achieved through color changes, with the hat offering two distinct striping pattern variations to suit different preferences. The hem detail on the hat adds a polished, finished appearance to the design.

Stitches Used

While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the pattern excerpt provided, the project uses fundamental knitting stitches appropriate for intermediate-level crafters working with worsted weight yarn. The construction method suggests stockinette stitch or similar basic stitches that create a smooth fabric suitable for displaying the color striping patterns that mimic the Andes Mints design aesthetic.

Materials and Yarn

  • Scarf Yarn: Worsted weight yarn totaling approximately 6 ounces (4 oz. brown and 2 oz. green). The sample was knitted using Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted in M-89 Roasted Coffee (1 skein) and M-16 Seafoam (1/2 skein), with each 4 oz. skein providing approximately 190 yards.
  • Scarf Needles: Size 9 circular needles, 28 inches or longer
  • Hat Yarn (Single Stripe Version): Worsted weight yarn totaling approximately 3 ounces (3 oz. brown and a very small amount of green). The sample was knitted using Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride Worsted in M-89 Roasted Coffee (1 skein) and M-16 Seafoam (small amount), with each 4 oz. skein providing approximately 190 yards.
  • Hat Needles: Size 6 circular needles (16 inches) and Size 6 double-pointed needles in a set of 4

Yarn Weight and Difficulty

This pattern is designed for intermediate knitters and uses aran weight yarn (also known as worsted weight). The combination of circular needle work, double-pointed needle techniques, color striping, and the multiple size options makes this an ideal project for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle more complex construction methods and pattern variations.
