What Is Being Made

The finished project is a 30 x 30 cm embroidered cushion cover, worked on a piece of natural linen fabric measuring 100 x 50 cm. The design showcases a botanical arrangement of poppies with textured centres, yellow wildflowers, curving stems, leaves, and berry clusters. Once the embroidery is complete, the fabric is made up into a cushion to fit a 30 x 30 cm cushion pad. The overall aesthetic is fresh, handcrafted, and botanically inspired — ideal for home décor.

Techniques Used

This pattern is rated intermediate in difficulty, making it well suited to embroiderers who are comfortable with basic stitches and ready to build confidence with more expressive freestyle techniques. Key techniques include:

• Pattern transfer: The design is transferred onto the linen by placing the fabric directly over the printed pattern and tracing with a fabric pen. A lightbox or a bright window can be used if the fabric is too thick to see through clearly.
• Hoop mounting: An embroidery hoop of approximately 20 cm is centred securely over the design area to keep the fabric taut and even while stitching.
• Strand management: The pattern makes deliberate use of different strand counts to create visual contrast and texture. 6 strands of Anchor Stranded Cotton are used for all leaves, berries, and petals to build bold, solid coverage, while 3 strands are used for stems and French knots to achieve finer, more delicate detail.

Stitches Used

Three core embroidery stitches are employed throughout this design, each chosen to suit the specific element being worked:

• Satin stitch: Used to fill the petals of both the poppies and the yellow wildflowers. Satin stitch involves placing parallel straight stitches closely side by side to create a smooth, solid, almost silky surface. Working with all 6 strands gives the petals a rich, full appearance. For the poppies, red thread fills each petal; for the wildflowers, yellow thread is used.
• French knots: Used to fill the centres of both the poppies and the wildflowers, as well as for berry clusters. French knots are formed by wrapping the thread around the needle (in this pattern, 3 turns of the needle) before inserting it back through the fabric, creating a small, raised, rounded knot. The poppy centres are worked first in yellow and then surrounded with orange French knots for a layered, textured effect. Wildflower centres are filled with orange French knots.
• Stem stitch: Used for all the flower stems in the design. Stem stitch produces a smooth, rope-like line that curves naturally, making it ideal for botanical stems and outlines. It is worked with 3 strands of thread for a refined, delicate line weight that contrasts with the bolder filled areas.
