Anchor Flaschenhülle – Embroidered Bottle Cover Pattern (Design No. 0060003-00709-10)

This free, downloadable PDF pattern from Anchor, designed by Anchor Studio and published by MEZ GmbH, guides crafters through creating a charming embroidered bottle cover (Flaschenhülle). The finished piece measures approximately 17 × 35 cm, making it an ideal decorative sleeve for a standard bottle. The embroidered motif itself measures approximately 6.5 × 12.5 cm and is worked centrally on counted fabric before being assembled into the finished cover. Rated as a beginner-level project, this pattern is a wonderful introduction to counted embroidery techniques using premium Anchor threads.

What Is Being Made

The project produces a decorative fabric bottle cover constructed from a combination of embroidered counted fabric and white felt. The cover is designed to slip over a bottle and is finished with a decorative red ribbon. The embroidered panel is the focal point of the design, showcasing a counted cross stitch and backstitch motif in a palette of classic Anchor thread colours. The assembled cover consists of two white felt rectangles (each 17 × 35 cm) and a circular felt base (approximately 11 cm in diameter), sewn together with matching Coats sewing thread and decorated with a 1 m red decorative ribbon (2.5 cm wide, by Rayher).

Embroidery Techniques Used

This pattern introduces two core hand embroidery techniques that are fundamental to counted needlework:

  • Cross Stitch (Kreuzstich): The primary technique used throughout the motif. Each square on the counted chart corresponds to one cross stitch. Cross stitch is always worked first before any additional stitches are added. A blunt-tipped needle (without a point) is recommended for working on evenweave fabric, as it slides between the threads rather than splitting them.
  • Backstitch (Steppstich): Worked over 2 fabric threads in both height and width, the backstitch is used to add outlines, detail, and definition to the motif. It is worked from right to left and is always completed after all cross stitches have been finished. Backstitch creates crisp, continuous lines that give the design its refined, finished appearance.
  • Hemstitch (Hohlsaumnaht): A simple hemstitch border is worked approximately 2.5 cm from the embroidery using Anchor Vierfach-Stickgarn (four-strand embroidery thread). This border is then frayed to a width of 1 cm, creating a delicate fringe effect around the embroidered panel.

Stitches Used

  • Cross Stitch – the foundation stitch of the entire motif
  • Backstitch (Steppstich) – for outlining and fine detail, worked over 2 fabric threads
  • Hemstitch (Hohlsaumnaht) – for the decorative fringe border around the embroidered panel
  • Zigzag Stitch (Zickzackstich) – used to neaten the raw fabric edges before embroidery begins

Thread and Materials

Anchor Threads

The pattern calls for a carefully selected range of Anchor threads, all of which are Oeko-Tex Standard certified, meeting recognised standards for pH values and colour fastness:

  • Anchor Vierfach-Stickgarn 25 (Four-Strand Embroidery Thread), colour #1 – used as a single strand for working the hemstitch border.
  • Anchor Metallic #300 – a metallic
