Anchor Deckchen & Päckchenkleid – Cross Stitch Embroidery Pattern by Siegrun Bob-Kulbe

This free downloadable PDF pattern from Anchor, designed by Siegrun Bob-Kulbe under design number 0060003-00709-01, presents two charming cross stitch embroidery projects: a decorative Deckchen (embroidered doily or table mat) and a Päckchenkleid (a small gift dress decoration). Both designs are rated as beginner level, making them an ideal introduction to counted cross stitch embroidery on linen fabric. The pattern is published by MEZ GmbH and is part of the trusted Anchor Crafts collection.

Project 1: Deckchen (Embroidered Table Mat)

What Is Being Made

The Deckchen is a finished embroidered table mat or decorative cloth with a finished size of 40 x 40 cm and a motif size of 30 x 30 cm. The design features a repeating heart motif arranged symmetrically across the fabric, creating an elegant and classic decorative piece suitable for home décor or as a handmade gift.

Techniques Used

  • Cross Stitch (Kreuzstich): The primary technique, worked over 2 fabric threads in both height and width. Cross stitch is completed in two passes — the foundation stitch worked from left to right, followed by the covering stitch worked from right to left, ensuring neat and uniform crosses throughout.
  • Running Stitch / Backstitch (Steppstich): Worked from right to left, used to add fine outlines or detail to the design.
  • Satin Stitch / Spanning Stitch (Spannstich): Also worked over 2 fabric threads in height and width, adding filled areas of smooth stitching to complement the cross stitch motifs.
  • Finishing: Fabric edges are neatened with zigzag stitches. A double hem of 3 cm width with mitered corners is sewn approximately 4.5 cm from the embroidery and topstitched neatly.

Stitches Used

  • Cross Stitch (Kreuzstich) over 2 fabric threads
  • Running/Backstitch (Steppstich)
  • Satin/Spanning Stitch (Spannstich) over 2 fabric threads

Materials

  • Thread: Anchor Stranded Cotton (Anchor Sticktwist), 8m skeins, used with 2 strands. Colours required: 1 skein of colour #47 and 2 skeins of colour #1.
  • Fabric: Approximately 52 x 52 cm of linen evenweave fabric with a count of 112 threads per 10 cm, such as Cashel by Zweigart & Sawitzki in linen.
  • Needle: A No. 24 tapestry needle (blunt-tipped) is recommended — a tip in the pattern reminds stitchers to always use a needle without a point for cross stitch.
  • Additional: Matching Coats sewing thread for hemming.

Difficulty & Chart Notes

Rated beginner, this project uses a counted chart where each square represents one cross stitch. The chart shows slightly more than one quarter of the full design, as the motif is symmetrical. Stitchers begin with a heart motif at the centre of one side, using basting threads to mark the centre lines as indicated by the dashed lines on the chart.

Project 2: Päckchenkleid (Gift Dress Decoration)

What Is Being Made

The Päckchenkleid is a small embroidered dress-shaped decoration, with a finished size of approximately 17 x
