“Anahata”

Anahata Socks by N.kaBia

What is Being Made

Anahata is a downloadable knitting pattern for a pair of socks designed by independent designer N.kaBia. This intermediate-level project creates fitted socks in multiple European shoe sizes (EU 36/37, 38/39, 40/41, 42/43, and 44/45), featuring colorwork and cable details worked in the round using the magic loop or DPN method.

Craft and Technique Overview

This sock pattern is worked using knitting as the primary craft. The socks are constructed in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs), a fundamental technique for seamless sock construction. The pattern incorporates two-color stranded colorwork, where knitters alternate between two solid yarn colors in every round to create a patterned design. Additionally, the pattern includes cable work, requiring the use of a cable needle to create twisted stitch textures. The cuff is worked in 2x2 ribbing (knit 2, purl 2) to create stretch and elasticity at the leg opening.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch – the foundational stitch for the main fabric
  • Purl stitch – used in the 2x2 ribbed cuff for elasticity
  • Cable stitches – created using a cable needle to twist stitches and form textured patterns
  • Stranded colorwork stitches – knit stitches worked in alternating colors to create patterned rounds

Materials and Tools Required

The Anahata pattern calls for two 50-gram balls of fingering weight sockyarn in 4-ply construction, totaling 100 grams with a yardage of 420 meters (459 yards). Two different solid colorways are required – referred to as colour A and colour B in the instructions. Knitters will need 5 double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size 2.5 mm (US 1.5), a size appropriate for fingering weight yarn and the tight gauge required for durable socks. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable pattern elements. Additional supplies include 2 stitch markers (optional but recommended for tracking pattern repeats) and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.

Pattern Structure

The sock begins with a cast-on of 60, 64, 68, 72, or 76 stitches depending on the chosen size, worked in colour A. Stitches are distributed evenly across four DPNs (15, 16, or 17 stitches per needle based on size). The cuff section spans 20 rounds of 2x2 ribbing, worked entirely in colour A to create a stable, elastic opening. From round 21 onward, the leg section begins, where knitters alternate between colour A and colour B in every round while simultaneously working the charted cable and colorwork pattern across 30 stitches in the middle of one needle. This creates a striking visual design combining twisted cable textures with contrasting solid colors.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who have experience with basic stitches and are ready to tackle more complex techniques. The combination of in-the-round knitting, two-color stranded colorwork, and cable work requires attention to tension, pattern reading, and stitch management, making it an ideal project for advancing knitters seeking to build confidence with multiple simultaneous techniques.
