What Is Being Made
The Amy Cushion is a knitted cushion cover designed as a downloadable PDF pattern. This intermediate-level project creates a finished cushion measuring approximately 36cm (14 inches) in length. The design features a button band closure with functional buttonholes, making it a practical and decorative home accessory suitable for adding texture and color to any living space.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The construction begins with casting on stitches and working in stockinette stitch as the primary fabric base. The pattern incorporates buttonhole shaping created through strategic casting off and casting on of stitches within rows, allowing for a functional button band closure. A fold line is established using a knit row worked on the wrong side, creating a defined edge for the button band. The pattern also demonstrates color work through the use of multiple yarn colors introduced at different stages of construction, building visual interest without requiring complex colorwork techniques like stranding or intarsia.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (st st): The primary stitch throughout the cushion, created by alternating knit rows on the right side with purl rows on the wrong side, producing a smooth, classic fabric
- Garter Stitch: Used for the fold line created by knitting a row on the wrong side, producing a textured ridge
- Cast On and Cast Off: Utilized within the fabric to create buttonholes, with stitches cast off and then recast on in subsequent rows to form functional openings
Materials and Specifications
The Amy Cushion pattern calls for DK weight yarn in five coordinating colors from the Rowan Summerlite collection. Yarn A (Coral Blush 467) requires 1 x 50g ball, while Yarn B (Seashell 466) is the primary color requiring 3 x 50g balls. Accent colors include Yarn C (Garden 471), Yarn D (Summer 453), and Yarn E (Mushroom 454), each requiring 1 x 50g ball. The pattern is worked on 3.25mm (US 3) needles, one pair, which is the standard needle size for DK weight yarn and ensures appropriate fabric density and drape for a cushion cover. The total yardage and specific construction sequence with color changes are detailed within the pattern instructions.
