Amigurumi Seal Pattern - Sable by Patchwork Moose
What is Being Made
Sable the Seal is a small crocheted amigurumi toy designed by Kate E Hancock. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished seal figure measuring approximately 5 to 6 inches (12 to 15 centimeters) in height when worked in DK weight yarn. Amigurumi is a Japanese craft technique for creating small, stuffed crocheted or knitted toys and decorative figures, typically featuring rounded, cute proportions and three-dimensional shaping.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction techniques to create a compact, dimensional toy. The design requires tight crocheting throughout to prevent toy filling from showing through the fabric, which is essential for achieving a polished, professional appearance in finished amigurumi pieces. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and includes options for both crocheted and safety eye embellishments, allowing makers to customize the final look based on intended use and recipient age.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch sequences are contained within the full pattern instructions, the project utilizes standard crochet stitches common to amigurumi construction. The pattern includes guidance on maintaining appropriate tension and stitch tightness to achieve the characteristic smooth, stuffed appearance of quality amigurumi toys. Stitch markers are recommended to help track rounds and maintain consistent shaping throughout the project.
Materials Required
- Yarn: One 50-gram ball of DK weight yarn in the main color, plus small amounts of black and colored yarn if choosing the crocheted eyes option
- Crochet Hooks: A 3.5mm (size E) hook for the main construction and a 3.25mm (size D) hook for the optional crocheted eyes
- Notions: Either two 20mm safety eyes or materials for crocheted eyes; toy filling for stuffing; yarn or thread for embroidering the nose; a yarn needle for finishing; and two stitch markers for tracking progress
Difficulty Level and Customization
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle dimensional toy construction. The pattern accommodates various yarn weights and hook sizes, though makers should note that yarn choice directly affects the finished size. When substituting yarn weights, the designer recommends using a slightly smaller hook than typically recommended for that yarn weight to maintain the tight tension necessary for amigurumi construction. Safety eye versus crocheted eye options allow customization based on whether the finished toy is intended for young children or older recipients.
