Amigurumi Elephant - Tilly by Patchwork Moose
What is Being Made
Tilly the Elephant is a handmade amigurumi toy designed by Kate E Hancock. This crocheted stuffed elephant measures approximately 6 inches (15 centimeters) when sitting, making it a compact decorative or play piece. Amigurumi is a Japanese craft technique for creating small, rounded, three-dimensional crocheted toys and figures with a distinctive cute aesthetic. Tilly represents a classic amigurumi project suitable for crafters with intermediate crochet experience.
Crochet Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs fundamental amigurumi construction methods to create a cohesive stuffed toy. The design requires tight crochet work throughout to prevent toy filling from becoming visible through the fabric. Crafters will work in continuous rounds using single crochet stitches as the primary stitch structure, building the elephant's body, head, legs, ears, trunk, and tail as separate components before assembly. The pattern uses US crochet terminology and includes options for both crocheted eyes and safety eyes, allowing makers to customize the finished piece based on intended use and personal preference.
Stitches Used
While the PDF emphasizes tight stitching throughout the project, single crochet is the foundational stitch for amigurumi construction. The pattern may incorporate standard increases and decreases to shape the rounded forms characteristic of amigurumi toys. Crafters should be comfortable with basic crochet fundamentals including working in the round and maintaining consistent tension.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: 2 x 50g balls of DK weight yarn in main color, small amounts of DK weight contrast yarn for toenails, and DK weight black yarn for the tail
- Crochet Hooks: 3.5mm (size E) as primary hook and 3.25mm (size D) for the optional crochet eyes
- Notions: Toy filling for stuffing, yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembly, stitch marker for tracking rounds
- Eyes: Either 2 x 20mm safety eyes or yarn for crocheted eye alternatives
Yarn Weight Flexibility
Although the pattern is written for DK weight yarn, the design notes indicate that crafters can substitute aran or worsted weight yarns if desired. Important to note: changing yarn weight will directly affect the finished size of the elephant. When using heavier yarn than specified, select a hook size slightly smaller than the yarn manufacturer recommends to maintain the tight tension necessary for amigurumi construction and prevent stuffing visibility.
Skill Level and Pattern Format
Rated as an intermediate project, Tilly the Elephant assumes familiarity with basic crochet techniques and the ability to follow written pattern instructions using US terminology. The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it accessible for digital reference during crafting. This format allows crafters to work at their own pace and refer back to instructions as needed throughout the project.
