Product Description
“Ami” is the Japanese word for “crochet”, so it’s certainly fitting that this crochet project bag design is derived from a Japanese knot bag. The unique closure of the Ami Project Bag creates a slight opening at the top when the long handle threads through the smaller handle. The long handle can then be held on the left wrist, creating a hands-free solution for the busy crocheter who wants to crochet on the go. The project bag makes a wonderfully thoughtful gift for any crocheter, especially you!
Stitches used: Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet
Yarn: Any worsted weight cotton with little to no stretch
Construction: Bottom is worked as a square with body worked in rounds. Straps are started along one side and attached with a whip stitch to the opposite side of the bag. The only seaming is attaching the loose ends of the straps to the top of the bag.

What is Being Made
The Ami Project Bag is a functional crochet tote designed for crafters who need portable storage for their projects. Inspired by traditional Japanese knot bags, this project bag features a distinctive closure system that creates a slight opening at the top when the long handle threads through a smaller handle. The design allows the long handle to wrap around your wrist, providing a hands-free carrying solution ideal for crocheters working on the go. The generous size accommodates full cakes of yarn and multiple project supplies, making it a versatile accessory for any fiber artist.
Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly crochet pattern employs continuous rows and rounds to construct the bag structure. The continuous construction method creates a seamless, close-knit fabric that requires no lining. The unique handle design—featuring both a long handle and a smaller handle that work together as a closure system—demonstrates thoughtful engineering for practical, hands-free use. The pattern is suitable for beginners, making it an accessible project for those new to crochet who want to create a functional, gift-worthy item.
Stitches Used
- Single crochet – the foundation stitch providing structure and density to the bag exterior
- Half double crochet – used throughout to create the close-knit fabric that eliminates the need for lining
Materials
The Ami Project Bag is made with Bernat "Handicrafter" cotton worsted weight yarn in the colorway Robin's Egg. The pattern requires 4 skeins of yarn (1.75 ounces/80 yards per skein; 50 grams/71 meters per skein). Cotton yarn was selected for its durability and easy-care properties, making the finished bag practical for everyday use and simple to maintain. A crochet hook appropriate for worsted weight yarn is required to complete this project.
