Product Description
This is a pattern for a very “long wingspan” crescent shaped shawl that is comprised of two different lace stitches. The ornate lace edging stitch is added in the traditional Shetland manner, and gives a beautiful and graceful bottom to the shawl. Nor is it nearly as difficult as it looks.
The shawl measures 68 inches at the widest points across the top and is 28 inches deep at the deepest point. It is made with a heavier of the fingering weight yarns, and is knit on size 7 (U.S.) needles.
The stitches are both charted and written out line by line.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of lace knitting).
Any heavy fingering weight yarn or sport weight yarn will work for this pattern.
Amaryllis Crescent Shawl by Linda Lehman
What is Being Made
The Amaryllis Crescent Shawl is an elaborately edged crescent-shaped shawl designed by Linda Lehman. This knitted wrap features a distinctive crescent silhouette and is crafted as a versatile accessory suitable for multiple wearing styles. The finished piece is intended to become a cherished heirloom garment, combining intricate lace work with practical wearability.
Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate to intermediate-plus level pattern centers on true lace knitting as its focal stitch element, creating a feminine and detailed aesthetic. The pattern requires solid foundational knitting skills including proficiency with knitting, purling, and yarn overs (yo's). The lace construction is worked in stockinette stitch as the base gauge reference, with the elaborate edging adding visual interest and complexity to the finished shawl. Wet blocking is recommended to achieve the specified gauge and optimal drape.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 1050 to 1150 yards of heavy fingering weight yarn in sport weight classification
- Needles: U.S. Size #6 (4.00 mm) needles with a cable length of at least 32 inches
- Notions: Two stitch markers and a darning needle for weaving in ends
Gauge and Specifications
The pattern specifies a gauge of approximately 4¼ stitches to the inch and 6½ rows to the inch when measured in stockinette stitch on wet blocked fabric. While precise gauge matching is noted as not critically important, variations in gauge will affect the final dimensions of the completed shawl.
Skill Level
Rated as Intermediate to Intermediate-plus, this pattern is designed for knitters with established experience and comfort with fundamental techniques. The complexity of the lace work and overall construction makes this an engaging project for intermediate knitters seeking to expand their skills, though the pattern notes it is not suitable for beginners.
