Product Description
The Almond Blossoms shawl is the first pattern in my van Gogh-inspired pattern series. Vincent van Gogh painted a group of almond blossom paintings, and he especially enjoyed painting flowering trees because they represent awakening and hope. I selected a yarn that reminds me of the colors in one of his almond blossom paintings, but any of the gorgeous hand-painted sock and fingering weight yarns available will make this shawl bloom. The shawl starts at the bottom point and is crocheted from the bottom up. This way, when you wear the shawl the stitches are right side up. Almond Blossoms is easy, fun and fast to crochet. After the first couple rows, it is an easy two-row repeat. Then, once the rows are completed you continue to the blossom dangle trim without breaking the yarn. The shell and mesh stitch pattern resembles blossoms and branches. The easy trim adds a fun, bouncy edging to the shawl.
Almond Blossoms Crochet Shawl by CJ Brady Designs
Project Overview
The Almond Blossoms shawl is a crocheted triangular shawl inspired by Vincent van Gogh's almond blossom paintings. This intermediate-level design is the first pattern in CJ Brady Designs' van Gogh-inspired pattern series, celebrating the symbolism of flowering trees as representations of awakening and hope. The shawl is worked from the bottom point upward, ensuring that stitches appear right side up when worn.
Construction Method and Techniques
This crochet shawl employs a bottom-up construction technique, which is a distinctive approach that differs from top-down shawl patterns. The pattern begins at a single point and expands as you work upward, creating the characteristic triangular shawl shape. The construction is designed to be accessible and enjoyable, with the pattern becoming straightforward after the initial rows.
The core of the shawl features an easy two-row repeat that forms the main body. This repetitive structure makes the project manageable for intermediate crocheters and allows for a meditative, rhythmic crocheting experience. Once the main body rows are completed, the pattern transitions seamlessly into a decorative blossom dangle trim without requiring you to break the yarn, maintaining continuity throughout the project.
Stitch Pattern and Design Details
The Almond Blossoms shawl showcases a shell and mesh stitch pattern that creates a visual resemblance to blossoms and branches. This stitch combination produces an open, lacy fabric that is both elegant and evocative of the flowering trees that inspired the design. The mesh elements allow for breathability and drape, while the shell stitches add textural interest and dimension.
The pattern concludes with an easy trim featuring blossom dangles that adds a fun, bouncy edging to the finished shawl. This decorative trim enhances the botanical theme and provides a playful finishing touch that distinguishes this design.
Yarn and Materials
The Almond Blossoms pattern is worked in 4-ply yarn weight, also known as fingering or sock weight. CJ Brady Designs recommends selecting yarn colors inspired by van Gogh's almond blossom paintings. The designer used one skein of Miss Babs Tarte (500 yards) for the original shawl. However, the pattern is versatile and works beautifully with any hand-painted sock and fingering weight yarns, allowing you to personalize the shawl with colors that resonate with you.
Difficulty Level and Project Characteristics
Rated as an intermediate-level project, the Almond Blossoms shawl is described as easy, fun, and fast to crochet. The straightforward two-row repeat and seamless transition to the trim make this an ideal project for crocheters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to explore shawl construction without overwhelming complexity. The project's manageable pace and enjoyable stitch patterns make it suitable for both experienced crafters seeking a relaxing project and intermediate-level makers building their skills.
Pattern Format
This design is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, allowing you to access the instructions immediately and work at your own pace. The digital format makes it convenient for reference while crocheting.
