Product Description

Shadow knitting is colourful and fun. From above you see stripes but viewed from an angle a cool cat appears.

I have made a dishcloth. You could make several and sew them together as a blanket or cushion cover.

This technique is well suited to a beginner knitter.

Instructions are both charted and written.

Techniques used: Knit, purl, two-row stripes, cast on, bind off, weaving in ends.

Finished size: Approximately 23 x 23 cm / 9 x 9 inches.

Yarn: Drops Paris 75 m/50 g (82 yds/1.7 oz); one skein in Red (12) (Yarn A) and one skein in Green (43) (Yarn B).

Needles/Notions: 4 mm (US 6) needles at least 25 cm/10” in length. Tapestry needle

Gauge: 21 sts and 36 rows to 10 cm (4 inches), measured in background pattern stitch after blocking. Gauge is not crucial for this project.

This pattern has been tech edited by sproutsnknits and test knitted by Terry Moncion, Suzanne Johnson, and my dedicated group of test knitters. I am most grateful.

Alley Cat Design Dishcloth by Laura Whittington

What is Being Made

The Alley Cat Design is a knitted dishcloth measuring approximately 23 x 23 cm (9 x 9 inches). This project introduces crafters to illusion or shadow knitting, a technique that creates visual imagery through strategic color changes and stitch manipulation. The finished dishcloth is both functional and decorative, making it suitable for kitchen use or as a gift.

Craft and Technique

This design uses illusion knitting, also known as shadow knitting, a specialized technique that produces hidden images or patterns visible only when the fabric is held at certain angles or when light passes through it. This beginner-friendly project serves as an excellent introduction to this advanced visual effect, allowing knitters to understand how color placement and row structure create dimensional imagery without complex stitch variations.

Stitches Used

  • Knit stitch – the primary stitch forming the fabric structure
  • Purl stitch – used strategically in the background pattern to enhance the illusion effect

Background Pattern Stitch

The pattern employs a 4-row repeating background stitch sequence. Rows 1 and 2 use Yarn A (Orange) worked entirely in knit. Row 3 introduces Yarn B (Shocking Pink) in knit, followed by Row 4 in purl using the same color. This alternating color and stitch combination creates the foundation for the shadow knitting effect.

Materials

Yarn: Drops Paris, an aran weight yarn at 75 m per 50 g (82 yards per 1.7 ounces). One skein each of Orange (13) and Shocking Pink (06) provides sufficient yardage for the complete project.

Needles: 4 mm (US 6) needles, minimum 25 cm (10 inches) in length, suitable for working flat. The pattern recommends using needles one size smaller than typically recommended for the yarn weight, which creates a tighter gauge beneficial for the illusion effect.

Additional Notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches and 36 rows to 10 cm (4 inches), measured in the background pattern stitch after blocking. Achieving accurate gauge is essential for proper sizing and for the illusion knitting technique to display correctly.

Difficulty Level

Rated as beginner-friendly, this pattern makes an ideal starting point for knitters new to shadow or illusion knitting techniques, despite the advanced visual results achieved.
