Product Description
The All Webbed Up Cowl features the original bold graphics inspired by crosses, spiders and webs. Discover the darker side of your soul, wrapped in spider webs.
The cowl is knitted from bottom up in mosaic technique, casting on three stitches and increasing at the beginning and end of each right side row. On the right-side of the cowl, the main colour appears in stockinette stitch, whereas the contrasting colour appears in garter stitch. After completing the flap, stitches are cast on for the back of the neck and joined for knitting in the round. The Main Colour can be solid, speckled or slightly variegated, as long there is good contrast with the Contrasting Colour.
The yarns used for the sample with white spider (without the tassel):
• MC Drops Delight, #16 Green Blue Print, 48 g
• CC Drops Nord, #1 Off White, 40 g
The second sample (with black spider) was made in DK weight chained yarn following the same directions:
• MC Drops Sky, #2 Light Grey, 50 g
• CC Drops Sky, #5 Black, 50 g

Project Overview
The All Webbed Up Cowl is an intermediate-level knitting pattern featuring bold, striking graphics inspired by crosses, spiders, and webs. This downloadable PDF pattern offers a modern take on neck wear with a darker aesthetic, combining geometric mosaic design with thoughtful color contrast. The cowl wraps the wearer in intricate web-inspired patterns, making it a statement piece for those seeking distinctive knitwear.
What Is Being Made
A cowl—a tubular neck garment—that combines a decorative flap section with a fitted neck band. The design showcases bold visual graphics created through mosaic knitting techniques, allowing the main color and contrasting color to create striking patterns reminiscent of spider webs and geometric crosses.
Construction Method and Techniques
The All Webbed Up Cowl employs the mosaic knitting technique, a method that creates intricate colorwork patterns without the complexity of traditional stranded colorwork. The construction begins from the bottom up, starting with a small cast-on of three stitches. The pattern increases at the beginning and end of each right-side row, gradually expanding the flap section that forms the decorative front of the cowl.
Once the flap is completed, new stitches are cast on for the back of the neck section and joined to knit in the round, creating a seamless tubular construction. This transition from flat knitting to circular knitting allows for both the decorative flap and a comfortable, fitted neck band in a single cohesive garment.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
The pattern utilizes a clever combination of basic stitches to achieve its visual impact:
- Stockinette stitch for the main color on the right side of the cowl, creating smooth, finished-looking fabric
- Garter stitch for the contrasting color, providing texture and helping the mosaic pattern stand out
- Increases at the edges to shape the flap section
- Circular knitting for the neck band portion
The mosaic technique itself relies on slipping stitches and working with two colors in a strategic sequence, allowing knitters to create complex-looking colorwork using only single-color rows rather than managing multiple colors simultaneously.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern is designed for 4-ply yarn weight, though the PDF demonstrates versatility by including instructions for DK weight alternatives. Successful results depend on selecting yarns with good contrast between the main color and contrasting color.
Sample One (without tassel):
- Main Color: Drops Delight, #16 Green Blue Print, 48 grams
- Contrasting Color: Drops Nord, #1 Off White, 40 grams
Sample Two (DK weight variation):
- Main Color: Drops Sky, #2 Light Grey, 50 grams
- Contrasting Color: Drops Nord (specific colorway and yardage not specified in provided content)
The main color can be solid, speckled, or slightly variegated, provided it maintains sufficient contrast with the contrasting color for the mosaic pattern to read clearly. The pattern accommodates different yarn weights and fiber blends, making it adaptable to various yarn stashes while maintaining the integrity of the bold graphic design.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, this pattern assumes knitters have solid foundational skills including casting on, basic increases, stockinette and garter stitch, and transitioning between flat and circular knitting. The mosaic technique, while visually complex, is manageable for intermediate-level knitters willing to follow the color sequence carefully.
