Product Description

All Together is an asymmetrical triangle shawl designed for playing with colour, contrast, and texture.

Bands of lace are linked by modular sections of floating cables over garter stripes in a choose your own adventure approach, creating a dynamic and highly customisable tapestry-like effect. Each section can flow on to any other section, or be continued to any size.

It was inspired by a gorgeous rainbow of yarn, a beautiful reminder that we all share this earth together, and that difference and diversity are qualities that strengthen us.

It is ideal for mini skein sets, blending solids/semi solids, or using up leftover scraps. Pairing a gradient and solid, or two gradients would also work brilliantly.

The size of the shawl is adaptable, both the texture stitch and the lace sections can be worked to any size.

Suits fingering to DK weight yarn in any yardage between approx 500m and 1500m.

The design can be worked entirely from the written pattern, or from charts with some notes.

All Together Asymmetrical Triangle Shawl by Nim Teasdale

What is Being Made

All Together is an asymmetrical triangle shawl designed by Nim Teasdale as a celebration of colour, contrast, and texture. This knitted shawl embraces diversity through its dynamic, customisable construction, inspired by beautiful rainbow yarns and the idea that difference and diversity strengthen communities. The finished shawl measures 180x75cm (70x30in) after blocking, making it a substantial wrap suitable for various styling options.

Design and Construction Approach

This pattern uses a choose-your-own-adventure approach to shawl construction, allowing knitters to create a highly personalised tapestry-like effect. The shawl is built by joining distinct sections together, giving crafters significant creative control over the final appearance and colour arrangement.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Lace sections – Openwork lace creates delicate, airy portions throughout the design
  • Floating cables – Cable stitches worked over garter stitch stripes add textural interest and visual contrast
  • Garter stripe sections – Ridged texture provides structure and a solid foundation between lace and cable elements
  • Asymmetrical shaping – The triangle construction is deliberately uneven, contributing to the dynamic aesthetic
  • Blocking – Final measurements are achieved after wet or steam blocking to set the shawl's shape and open up the lace

Stitches and Stitch Work

The pattern combines multiple stitch types to achieve its textured, multi-dimensional appearance. Lace stitches create openwork sections, while cable stitches add raised, twisted texture. Garter stitch (knit every row) forms the striped base sections that anchor the design. The combination of these contrasting stitch structures—delicate lace, dimensional cables, and solid garter ridges—creates visual and tactile variety throughout the finished shawl.

Yarn and Materials

All Together is designed to work with fingering to DK weight yarn, offering flexibility in yarn choice. The pictured sample used 945 metres (1040 yards) of RiverKnits BFL 4 ply in Jewel Rainbow, worked on 3.75mm (US size 5) needles. The pattern is particularly well-suited to mini skein sets, allowing knitters to blend multiple colours, solids, semi-solids, and gentle speckled yarns. Knitters can also use leftover scraps, pair gradients with solids, or combine two gradient yarns. Needle size should be adjusted to suit your preferred gauge, as the pattern is adaptable to any yardage within the fingering to DK weight range.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with lace stitches, cables, and following a more complex construction method. The choose-your-own-adventure format adds an element of creative decision-making beyond basic pattern following.
