Product Description

As summer gets underway there are days when the last thing I want on my lap is an entire sweater. But a hat? That's perfect for late summer.

The Algonquin Hat is a simple beanie with just a touch of slouch. The combination of texture and color is striking, but easy. I've played with this detail to connect the ribbing to texture - you only see this on the blue hat since I added it into the pattern after finishing the gray one. (ahem) It's relaxing summer knitting.

As always, the Plucky is a dream to work with. Both the Primo or the Bello are soft, with great stitch definition and the perfect amount of drape for this kind of hat. Plus, let's be honest - this is ALL about the color mixing. And you just can't beat Plucky for gorgeous color combos.

I've written the pattern for either Sport or Worsted weight yarn. Instructions are included to modify for width or depth should you want to alter the size or play with a different yarn weight.

Other listed yarns are suggested substitutes.

Algonquin Hats by BabyCocktails

Project Overview

The Algonquin Hat is a knitted hat design created by independent designer BabyCocktails (Thea Colman). This project is ideal for summer and late-season knitting, offering a portable project that fits easily into a knitting bag with minimal shaping to manage. The hat features an addictive textured stitch pattern and is designed for crafters with intermediate knitting experience.

What Is Being Made

A finished knitted hat suitable for year-round wear, with particular appeal as a lightweight summer accessory or as a head start on holiday gift knitting. The design accommodates color mixing and matching, allowing knitters to combine background and accent yarn colors for personalized results.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Algonquin Hat employs a textured stitch pattern that creates visual interest and tactile appeal. The pattern is described as addictive once mastered, making it engaging for intermediate-level knitters. The design incorporates two-color knitting with a designated background color and accent color, allowing for creative color combinations.

Yarn Weight Options

This pattern is available in two yarn weight variations:

  • Worsted Weight Version: Requires 150 yards total yarn (100 yards background color, 50 yards accent color). Recommended yarn includes Plucky Knitter Primo Worsted or Bello Worsted. The photographed example uses Bello Worsted in Flannel background with Malt Whiskey accent.
  • Sport Weight Version: Requires 225 yards total yarn (150 yards background color, 75 yards accent color). Recommended yarn is Plucky Knitter Primo Sport. The photographed example uses Primo Sport in Betrothed background with Narragansett accent.

Needles and Notions

The Worsted version requires two needle sizes: US#6/4mm needles and US#7/4.5mm needles. This needle size variation allows for gauge control and shaping throughout the hat construction.

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate difficulty, the Algonquin Hat is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle textured stitch patterns and color work.

Design Features

The pattern encourages customization through color selection, enabling knitters to mix and match Plucky Knitter yarn colors to create unique colorway combinations. The portable nature of the project makes it ideal for on-the-go knitting, with a manageable scope that fits comfortably on the lap during knitting sessions.
