Product Description

I made Alfie, the lucky black cat, as a homage to our lovable, aloof rogue. Who, in his time, has bestowed upon us the gifts of bats, birds, and a dazed magpie perched on the dinning room table. He's certainly a character who deserves to be immortalised.

Pattern Level: Intermediate This pattern is not difficult as long as you are familiar with basic crochet stitches and the techniques of amigurumi. Any special stitches, or techniques, are described in the pattern. For this reason I would suggest this pattern is intermediate level.

Suggested Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Simply Double Knit and Debbie Bliss Angel.

Finished size is aprox 33cm.

Pattern supplied as a digital download.

This pattern is written in UK terminology.

Alfie Cat Amigurumi Toy by Seòlta Hooker

What is Being Made

Alfie Cat is a crocheted amigurumi-style toy cat designed by independent designer Seòlta Hooker. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a finished cat approximately 33cm in height. The design features a poseable structure with articulated limbs and a flexible tail, making it a three-dimensional stuffed toy suitable for display or play.

Craft and Primary Technique

This project uses crochet as the primary craft method. The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology, which uses different abbreviations and stitch names than US terminology. The entire toy is constructed by crocheting individual body parts separately and then assembling them together. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that crafters should have foundational crochet skills and experience with basic shaping and assembly techniques before beginning this project.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental crochet stitches and techniques to construct the toy:

  • Chain (ch) - Used to create foundation stitches and increase stitch counts
  • Double Crochet (dc) - A core stitch used throughout the body pieces for structure and density
  • Half Treble Crochet (htr) - Provides varied stitch height and texture in different sections
  • Half Treble Crochet Increase (htr inc) - Used for shaping and expanding sections such as the head and body
  • Decrease (dec) - Applied to shape and taper sections, particularly for creating limbs and facial features
  • Increase (inc) - Expands stitches to create wider sections and rounded forms
  • Slip Stitch (ss) - Joins rounds and secures stitches without adding height

A distinctive technique used throughout is double strand crocheting, where two strands of yarn are worked together simultaneously. This creates a thicker, more durable fabric suitable for a toy that may experience handling and play.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for DK (Double Knit) weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn ideal for creating defined stitches and detailed amigurumi work. Specific yarn brands and colors are recommended:

  • 2 balls of Paintbox Yarns Simply Double Knit in Black
  • 2 balls of Debbie Bliss Angel in Black

The use of two different black yarn brands allows crafters to blend or substitute based on availability. Since the pattern uses double strand throughout, the total yardage requirement is substantial despite the finished toy's compact size.

Tools and Notions Required

Beyond yarn, this project requires several essential tools and embellishments:

  • 4mm Crochet Hook - The primary tool for constructing all crocheted pieces
  • Stitch Marker - Helps track the beginning of rounds during crochet work
  • Tapestry Needle - Used for sewing in yarn ends and assembling body parts
  • Safety Eyes - Two 30mm green glitter safety eyes (or yellow as an alternative) for facial features
  • Safety Nose - One 21mm flock triangle safety nose for the cat's face
  • Wooden Dowels - Two 12-inch dowels inserted into the legs to provide poseable structure and stability
  • Pipe Cleaners - Three 15cm pipe cleaners used in the tail to allow flexible positioning
  • Polyester Fiberfill Stuffing - Fills all body parts to create a soft, three-dimensional form
  • Wire Pet Brush - Used to finish and texture the crocheted surface, creating a realistic fur-like appearance
