Alec XL Knitted Sweater by Sarah Ronchetti

What Is Being Made

Alec XL is a men's knitted sweater designed by Sarah Ronchetti, adapted from the child version of the Alec pattern. The design is versatile and works equally well as an unisex sweater, making it suitable for various body types and style preferences. This downloadable PDF pattern provides comprehensive instructions for creating a finished garment with professional shaping and construction techniques.

Design and Fit Approach

The pattern emphasizes customized fit through finished measurements rather than standard sizing. Sarah Ronchetti recommends adding 3 to 5 inches (7.5 to 13 centimeters) of positive ease in the chest for men's sizing, meaning knitters should select a size 3 to 5 inches larger than the wearer's actual chest measurement. The pattern includes finished back neck measurements to ensure proper fit at the neckline, as this area may require size adjustments independent of chest sizing. For women and those preferring closer fits, the pattern accommodates zero or negative ease options, allowing knitters to choose smaller sizes for a more tailored appearance.

Knitting Techniques Used

Alec XL employs raglan construction, a classic sweater-building method where increases are worked along raglan lines to shape the armholes and create sleeve caps simultaneously with the body. This technique allows for seamless integration of sleeves into the body and provides excellent fit customization through strategic increase placement. The pattern structure enables knitters to adjust sizing mid-project by modifying when raglan increases begin, accommodating different neck and chest proportions without reknitting.

Yarn and Materials

Alec XL is designed to work with multiple yarn weights, offering flexibility in final garment appearance and drape. The pattern accommodates Aran weight, DK weight, and Worsted weight yarns, allowing knitters to choose based on desired fabric characteristics, available materials, and finished garment weight. Appropriate knitting needles should be selected according to the chosen yarn weight and the pattern's gauge requirements.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, Alec XL requires competency with fundamental knitting techniques including cast-on methods, basic stitches, and increases. Knitters should be comfortable following pattern instructions, managing multiple stitch counts, and executing raglan shaping. The intermediate classification reflects the need for attention to detail in sizing decisions and increase placement rather than complex stitch patterns.

Pattern Format

This is a downloadable PDF pattern, providing immediate access to complete instructions, schematic diagrams, and sizing information. The digital format allows knitters to reference the pattern on multiple devices and print sections as needed during the knitting process.

I like the wool and the pattern. One of the circular knitting needles soon snapped so I won't choose that brand again!
