What is Being Made

Aldona is an asymmetric, triangle-shaped shawl designed as a knitting project by sochaknits. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a large, elegant wrap featuring a long biased triangle construction. The finished shawl measures approximately 215 cm (84 inches) across the wingspan with a center depth of 50 cm (20 inches), making it a generous accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Construction Method and Design

The shawl is knitted from one end with gradual increases that build the triangular shape throughout the project. The construction technique employs a strategic increase and decrease pattern that creates the distinctive bias of the triangle. All right-side (RS) rows contain both an increase and a decrease, while all wrong-side (WS) rows begin with an increase. Aldona is designed to be worked in fingering weight yarn (also called 4-ply weight), which provides the correct gauge for this pattern. The shawl requires yarn in four distinct colors with the following yardage requirements:

• Color A: approximately 380 m / 420 ya
• Color D: approximately 380 m / 420 ya
• Color B: approximately 80 m / 87 ya
• Color C: approximately 80 m / 87 ya

The sample photographed in the pattern was created using Meme Yarns Single Merino in four colorways: 2 skeins each in color 58 Vibrant and color 60 Beetle, plus 2 mini skeins each in color 20 Cornflower and color 27 Vibrant Green.

Needles and Gauge

This project requires 4.0 mm (US size #6) circular needles. The pattern is worked to a gauge of 17 stitches by 44 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in garter stitch, measured after blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the shawl to reach its intended finished measurements.
