Product Description

With Aganippe, I began a series of wraps with names from Ancient Greek myths. My inspiration and backdrop for this series is the full-sized replica of the Athenian Parthenon located here in Nashville, TN. It was constructed as part of the state's Centennial Exposition.

Aganippe is a crescent-shaped wrap that is 90 inches (228.6 cm) along the outer curve and 19 inches (48.3 cm) at the widest point. Aganippe was a nymph dwelling in a freshwater spring, and the design immitates the look of a fountain.

The following stitches were used: chain, double crochet, double crochet two together, half double crochet.

Aganippe Crescent Shawl by Julie Blagojevich

What Is Being Made

Aganippe is an intermediate-level crescent-shaped wrap designed by Julie Blagojevich and published through CrochetWorks. This shawl takes its name from the mythological nymph Aganippe, who dwelled in a freshwater spring. The design evokes the imagery of a fountain or spring, with colors inspired by clear waters. The finished shawl measures approximately 90 inches around the outer curve and 19 inches wide after blocking, making it a substantial wrap suitable for layering or wearing as a decorative shawlette.

Crochet Techniques and Construction

This crochet design employs fundamental shaping techniques to create its distinctive crescent silhouette. The pattern uses consistent stitch patterns worked in rows to build the curved shape, requiring intermediate-level crochet skills. Blocking is an essential finishing step for this project, as the dimensions change noticeably from pre-blocking (84 inches around the outer curve, 16 inches wide) to post-blocking measurements, indicating that proper blocking significantly enhances the final drape and appearance of the wrap.

Stitches Used

The primary stitches employed in Aganippe are abbreviated as SH (Shell stitches) and PC (Picot stitches or similar decorative elements). These stitches are worked consistently throughout the pattern, with a gauge of 8 stitch repeats by 12 rows equaling 4 inches in a square swatch. The combination of shell and picot stitches creates an open, lacy fabric appropriate for a delicate wrap.

Yarn and Materials

  • Yarn: Abner Jones Art Yarns Squish! Silky Lace, a hand-dyed blend of 80% superwash merino and 20% silk
  • Yardage: 875 yards (800 meters) per hank; one hank is required for the project
  • Weight: 3.5 ounces (100 grams)
  • Hook: Size E hook (3.5 mm)
  • Notions: Darning needle for weaving in ends, stitch marker to indicate right side, and blocking tools

The merino-silk blend provides both warmth and drape, while the superwash treatment ensures easy care. The hand-dyed nature of the yarn contributes to the water-inspired aesthetic central to the design concept.
